Charging a phone over night?

Back when I had a non-smartphone I had it's battery swell up to the point that I couldn't close the case due to my leaving the charger plugged into the phone even after the battery filled up to full capacity.

Someone told me that with more recent devices this is not a problem and it is safe to leave the phone charging after it has reached 100%.

I have a Samsung Galaxy 2 now, is it safe to keep this thing charging over night? To keep it charging even after it's reached 100%.

No........don't do it. it will boil battery and ruin it eventually.
its a safety issue also or could be. Also never run down battery to 0 volts.
Always recharge no later than at least 20%. never 0 volts.
it takes the life out of the battery either or as mentioned.

I don't tend to charge overnight because of safety.
I've heard mobile phone caught fire while charging. That would be the last thing you want when sleeping...

It's fine. I leave my crap plugged in every night, how else are you supposed to start the day with a full charge?

The charging circuit for li-ion doesn't blindly just dump electrons down the circuit. Once the battery is full it reverts to a small maintenance charge.

This. So there is no danger when charging a phone overnight.

That's only with people that buy either shitty aftermarket replacement batteries or companies like Samsung that make the Note 8 and don't test their batteries enough.

It also has to do with heat. If you're charging your phone under your pillow it's going to get hot, and batteries do not like getting hot.

If my phone or tablet is down to 25% it only takes about 1-1/2 hours to charge 100%.
2hrs at most in airplane mode or shut down.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. You will not boil your battery and ruin it by leaving it charged overnight. Modern charging methods used in smartphones prevent overcharging, and will trickle charge devices if kept in when they reach full charge. There is no harm in doing this, nearly everyone charges their phone overnight.

Now you say you have a Galaxy S2 which is a 6 year old phone, so most likely the original battery needs replacing if it hasn't been replaced already. Battery life deteriorates as time goes on.

The Galaxy Note7? That was a design flaw with the phone and battery. Doesn't matter if you're charging it at night or during the day. In fact, you'd likely be better off charging it at night since it will be cooler than charging it during the day when you're likely using it and/or it's more likely to be exposed to sun and heat, which increases the battery temp.

Overcharging will destroy a battery and i suggest ya don't do it. I know something about it and electrical.
Electrician and electronic tech for 37 yrs. I have a S7 Edge. and trading it in because i don't like it. upgrade is cheap.

This is the philosophy I use and my Samsung S4 bat has been pretty good now for two years.

It's like leaving a battery in a laptop and using the wall adapter. Over time the battery will fail, and such is the case with me leaving the battery in all the time. Now I need to replace the laptop battery.

No different really, same battery tech, same style of charging. I've left mine plugged in for months at a time with the battery in, still usable for a couple hours after 10 years.

Oh you.

That is 100% true, overcharging is extremely bad for the longevity of the battery and creates a fire hazard. However, phones will not overcharge batteries. No smartphone, laptop, etc. in the last decade would overcharge. Once it hits 100% it stops charging, and will trickle charge it once it drops back down to the point where it can accept a charge again.

Sure eventually this will happen, but unless you are using your laptop plugged in for months and months without ever using the battery, it's not going to be a problem. You likely notice that most laptops will have the battery drop down to ~95% when plugged in, and will then top back up. This process is very slow, but sure over many years it will make a difference.
