Cheap build

Well, i havent even made my first build yet either. Mine was supposed to be coming now, but i'm running into a few financial problems that might delay the build for about a month. :(

Umm.. when you get your quad core, do you plan on upgrading your mobo as well? You say you want to upgrade both your psu and cpu in the future, are you thinkingof making a completely new build then too?

no not a completely new build, just what i can within the limitations of my mobo... so later i will upgrade to the best chip my mobo can support :) let me link you my plan for the psu and case... :)

RAIDMAX xB ATX-528B Black SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Athena Power AP-P4ATX42F ATX12V Ver.2.2 420W Power Supply

Lol. idk about those two. Get input from other people on those. I just dont like how the case has rear vents instead of an output fan, but i have an IBM tht has almost the same thing so i guess it shouldn't be that bad. The psu also only has 21 amps on one rail, so idk about that either to tell the truth. I know that both of them could work well with the parts i suggested earlier, but the problem is that a lot of what you are planning on getting wouldnt do well with the quad core or overclocking (i dont think).

Read the customer reviews on the 965G-DS3 concerning overclocking and figure out if that board is truely what you want to get. If it's fine for you, then i'll make further suggestions about everything else. I'm just not sure about whether or not you really want that board.

i am going to make a thread in the cases and psu's for this, thanks you were a big help!!! :)

OK. then i suggest you get a new case but not a new psu. When you get your quad core and seperate gpu, you're going to want a powerful psu, probably around $80 or so.

are you sure this psu will work it is very outdated, it was designed for a pentium 4, onboard video and 256 mb of ram.. aslo it is a HP pavilion 354n if that helps, i mean if you are 100 percent sure then i will use it but if not i can get one preparing only for the 8600 because the next thing that i will buy is the 8600 and so i could just buy a PSU that supports it and then buy a HIGH END one with the QUAD.. how does that sound... annother option is just to get a case with a psu for like 40 bucks...

EDIT: i really like this case and it will suit me better for now until i SERIOUSLY upgrade... what do you think..

well i wont overclock because im just getting a 100 dollar chip for now and will oc later... ok new plan considering i cant use RAM...

275 for

1) CPU
2) MOBO-must have Onboard Video
3) RAM-512mb

Why don't you get a ds3 @ $125
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128018

Pentium D 805 @ 60 (OEM)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116249

And 1 gig of patriot ddr2 800 memory @ 60 (Not high end, but im pretty sure would beat any 512 stick you were thinnking of getting)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116249

THat's $245 and the processor there could definetly hold you off until the quad cores come down in price (which the ds3 supports). So instead of going to core 2 duo, you could go sraight to the the quad cores in Q3. Also, with the remaining 30 dollars you could get a good HS/Fan for your cpu that you could keep when you upgrade. The memory is also a 1 gb dimm, which you could double two dual channel 2 gb later on for gaming and such.

Just a suggestion.

$275 for those three can actually get you pretty far thought

(for juss a lil cheaper, you could get an S3 instead of a DS3.)

That's a good idea. My only thing is that you absolutely must get the 965P version of the DS3 or the S3. By all means, don't get the 965G version. You're lucky to get 300FSB with it, and with the 965P version, you can sometimes hit 500FSB. It is well worth spending the extra now and getting a graphics card.

As far as the processor goes, it is worth spending the extra for the 820 over the 805. With the 820, you only have a 14X multiplier, but with the 805, you have a 20X. The thing is, you can't lower the multiplier. With 20x, running at 200mhz FSB gets you to 4Ghz. You want to be hitting 4Ghz at more around 285FSB like with the 820. (Not assuming you'll be able to get to 4, but still).

^That was unbias. This next paragraph could be.

Buy my processor/motherboard set:
Intel Pentium D 820
Intel D945PSN Total for above set: $125
Buy some memory: ~$60
Get a video card like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130062 ($109, with $10 rebate)

Total: $294, minus $10 rebate = $284

A bit over budget, but that is a very decent gaming rig there. I'll admit it, the motherboard isn't designed 1, for overclocking, or 2, for Core 2 Duo. You can sell the motherboard later on, and then spend $95 on a Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 along with your choice of Core 2 Duo motherboard.

Sounds good. If you REALLY want the 8500, then i guess you could switch the gpu above for that one. And go ahead and get a case with a psu for around 40 or 50, and try to maybe sell the mobo + cpu when you upgrade to quad core and get a new combo when you do. (ebay??)

With the solution above, you could even start overclocking now so you'll be more than familiar when you get your quad core later on. BUT, when you get your quad core, you're def gonna have to get a better psu.

Here is what i am thinking...

Pentium D 820
as far a a mobo, i want to go cheaper without the onboard video, and i will buy the GPU right away... also i will oc
GPU- which one?? 8500, 8600, GeForce 7600GT 256MB
RAM- 1g
Hipro 400W PSU 30 bucks

how much cheaper are you expecting to go with the mobo? I suggested a 965P-S3 before. Should be around 105 i think.

And i'd say go with a 7600GT, but probably expect to upgrade your GPU in about a year, year and a half, when dx10 games are starting to really come out. Like summer 2008, or in prep of the 2008 holiday season.

hey last night i was rethinking, if i overclock i would have to get WAYYY better case cooling and cpu cooling and that would add to the cost. Here are the two altimatums, none of these i would OC,

1) Pentium D 820, an 80 dollar mobo, allong with the the 50 dollar psu and new case, and the 7900 which would put me at arround $320

2) Pentium D 820, the Onboard video board, 1gb ram, my original case and later when dx10 games come out i would buy case and video board..

which would put me at arround $250, with the later upgrade of 200

6) allong with 50 dollar ram, or the ram from potatoez,

this is what i think i will be going with, i wont be ocing, and its everyting i need at good quality for a very low price... of 388!!!!!!!!!!

u dont need way better cpu cooling unless you do really big ocs. but a case with good cooling is always a good thing to have. probably be best to look for a cheap case that has slots to add extra fans when you need them

Oh and ezefosure, I have been talking with him on x fire for some time now. were woring something out together.
