1) CPU
2) MOBO-must have Onboard Video

Why don't you get a ds3 @ $125
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128018
Pentium D 805 @ 60 (OEM)

And 1 gig of patriot ddr2 800 memory @ 60 (Not high end, but im pretty sure would beat any 512 stick you were thinnking of getting)

THat's $245 and the processor there could definetly hold you off until the quad cores come down in price (which the ds3 supports). So instead of going to core 2 duo, you could go sraight to the the quad cores in Q3. Also, with the remaining 30 dollars you could get a good HS/Fan for your cpu that you could keep when you upgrade. The memory is also a 1 gb dimm, which you could double two dual channel 2 gb later on for gaming and such.
Just a suggestion.
$275 for those three can actually get you pretty far thought
(for juss a lil cheaper, you could get an S3 instead of a DS3.)
That's a good idea. My only thing is that you absolutely
must get the 965P version of the DS3 or the S3. By all means, don't get the 965G version. You're lucky to get 300FSB with it, and with the 965P version, you can sometimes hit 500FSB. It is well worth spending the extra now and getting a graphics card.
As far as the processor goes, it is worth spending the extra for the 820 over the 805. With the 820, you only have a 14X multiplier, but with the 805, you have a 20X. The thing is, you can't lower the multiplier. With 20x, running at 200mhz FSB gets you to 4Ghz. You want to be hitting 4Ghz at more around 285FSB like with the 820. (Not assuming you'll be able to get to 4, but still).
^That was unbias. This next paragraph could be.
Buy my processor/motherboard set:
Intel Pentium D 820
Intel D945PSN Total for above set: $125
Buy some memory: ~$60
Get a video card like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130062 ($109, with $10 rebate)
Total: $294, minus $10 rebate = $284
A bit over budget, but that is a very decent gaming rig there. I'll admit it, the motherboard isn't designed 1, for overclocking, or 2, for Core 2 Duo. You can sell the motherboard later on, and then spend $95 on a Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 along with your choice of Core 2 Duo motherboard.
