Hi All.

Thinking a few things through it regards to my computer (deciding between a whole new rig or an upgrade)

Now if I was to upgrade to a Phenom II with Am3 and ddr3 etc Ill take my 4870 and 650tx with me.

So that leaves me with a athlon 6000+ etc etc with the old stock 400w psu that came with my case and no graphics card.

So whats the best/price/performance card I can get that will go with a 400w, just so I can get that old rig going (instead of having the parts just sitting there)

Cheers

on a 400w psu i wouldnt go any higher than a 9600GT,but im not too good with PSU.

It doesnt only go by what Watts a psu is.

9600GSO not a bad card, its just a renamed 8800GS. But I think it has the same minimum requirements of something like a 9600GT/8800/9800GT. 450W with 24/26 amps.

The 9600GT would be cutting it really close... as in, your PSU would probably just barely support it. How many amps are on the +12v rail? If you've got 24 or more you should be good, but anything less might not be a good idea with it.

Haha the 400w PSU came with a 50 dollar case (NZ$) so its budget lol.

OK, than I wouldn't go with the 9600GT if I were you...

You'd be a lot safer with a 9400GT, but then you won't have NEAR as good of a GPU as the 9600GThttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130395. You could go with the 9500GT, which is a good deal better than the 9400GT. Another option would be the HD3650, which should be a decent card and has pretty low power requirements (300W.)

I'm still not so sure about that PSU... there should be a sticker on your PSU with all the outputs and everything of the PSU... if you could post how many amps the +12v rail has it's be great (if you don't know what that is you could upload a picture.)

Yeah I will have a look when I get home.

When I brought the computer it had a 8600gt which ran no problems, dont know if that helps.

Well then then the 9500GT should run no problem, and possibly the 9600GT... it'd still be good to find out what your PSU can handle.

That's enough for a 9600GT

Calibretto is running a Q6600 and an 9800GT on an Antec 380W ;)

Yes as long as the PSU he has have enough amps on the 12v rail, it should run fine. But from his description as "it came with the case", I don't think it's that reliable.

Just read this, looks like the 9600GSO is better, however it says it needs a 6pin from the PSU, I dont know if the stock 400W comes with that. Can I use one of those plugs thats converts a normal power plug (like for cdroms etc) to a 6pin?

It depends, you will have to check if the card supports it. Cos with my current card it says in the manual you cant use a two 4pin to 6pin converter. The funny thing was they included one in the box
