Hey all, I'm looking to get a computer for cheap that i can use with my current components to play games like Half Life 2, i don't want to break any records, i just want to be able to play it a little better than i can now. I'm on a budget of about 200 bucks. My current specs are a 1.4Ghz AMD Duron Processor, on an MSI main board with 512 megs of DDR ram, and a ATI Radeon 9550 128 meg video card, i'm thinking of buying a Sempron 64 3000+ a new case and an MSI K8MM-V Socket 754 main board. I am aware that this is a dead end socket, but i just want something that will cover me for about 2 years. The specs of they system i plan to build with current parts and the new ones listed above are, an AMD Sempron 64 3000+ 640 Meg of DDR ram, the same video card. Any ideas if this is a good plan, keep in mind i can't spend over 200 bucks. Thanks

save up more, no use in wasting that money

you wont even see a big jump i would have to say, and the games you would be able to play would still be limited

(plus the case would do nothing to help your performance)

i suppose so, but i'd also be doing this so i can retire a couple old computers, a dell optiplex with a 133 mhz processor and a compaq presario with a 33mhz processor, with this setup i'll have my current 1.4 ghz duron system as my file server, a reasonable jump from the current 900 mhz duron i'm using now, and i'll be able to use the 900 mhz duron system for my old games that will only run under windows 98.

i think it's a good trade off.

Like i said in that other thread that you posted in and like Ctcoyote16 said save up a little more. 500 dollars can get you a very decent computer, where as 200 will get you no where.

The two options id consider are S754+512 or S754+VC, leave the case out of this

1. Unlike comps of the 80s, comps nowadays dont actually require a case to operate for extended durations
2. You can get a cheapo case whenever, putting money into a halfassed core component will never be a smart idea :)

well i bought the whole thing despit what all of you said, and i'm glad i bought it, i'm flyin now. This computer is great!!

If you can afford it, another stick of 512mb ram would probably do you good. For the system you have, it wouldn't be a huge increase in performance gaming wise but it would surely be more than worth it I think.

Although it might be worth the $5-$10 premium of getting 1x1GB as you're not utiulizing 128bit memory access anyways :)

Yes it would considering he is prolly using over 512 mbs of ram when playing HL 2.

With such a low budget, it would prob be better buying an OEM. When i tried to price a cheap computer, dell were cheaper with something better than building (Only a crappy celeron etc)
