Cheap graphics card

My friend has a old celeron D computer and he would like to play battlefield 2142 but he only has a pci slot is there any good ones out there that can allow him to play it with med settings?
 
Oddly enough to get a decent PCI card you have to spend more than you would for something better that is PCIe, how much does he want to spend?
 
Check out the minimum system requirements for Battlefield 2142:
* 1.7 Ghz CPU
* 512 MB RAM
* 128 MB video card supporting 1.4 shaders (ATI Radeon 8500 / NVIDIA FX 5700 or above), DirectX Compliant
* Internet connection: 128kbit Cable/DSL connection
* Hard Drive space: 1.8Gb of space is required to install the game
* Windows XP with latest service pack installed DirectX 9.0c February 2006 edition (included) (does not work on Windows 2000/Me)

That was MINIMUM, which means it will JUST run it, the recommended is:
* 3.0 Ghz CPU
* 1.5 GB RAM
* 256 MB video card supporting 1.4 shaders (ATI Radeon X700 / NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT or above)
* Internet connection: 512Mb Cable/DSL connection
* Hard Drive space: 1.8Gb of space is required to install the game
* Windows XP with latest service pack installed DirectX 9.0c February 2006 edition (included) (does not work on Windows 2000/Me)

I very much doubt ANY PCI card can run the game plus your Celeron is just not built for gaming. Even if you have a Celeron D it would still lag. I have a 7900GT and a X6800 Core 2 Duo CPU, and at times it still lags at 1600X1200. You will have no hope of running Battlefield 2142 in low settings let along med with a PCI card.
I have yet to see a high performance PCI graphics card, I have only seen 9250s and 5200s, enlighten me if I'm wrong.
 
I just walked past an Visiontek Radeon 9250 128mb pci model in a Staples. But I'm not surprised to still see that old model just sitting there. One Diamond Radeon X1300 model(Vista ready) is seen at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103016 But it also depends on the top price.

The next step down sees a Diamond 9250 128mb card for $81.99 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103011

But for the lowest price seen on the same model card Sapphire has their 9250 seen for $39.99 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102696
 
That card is USELESS, can it even play Doom 3? The 9250 should be on par with the 5200, and I have had that before, such a POS.
 
If you seriously want to get a PCI card (rather then upgrade completely), then I would look into the nVidia 6 series, or the ATI x1300. Neither will give you great performance, but they will allow you to play on decent settings.
 
Is there a PCI version of the 6600GT? If there is, then I would definitely get that one. Would the PCI lane be able to cope with the bandwidth needed to play high demanding games such as elder scroll properly?
 
basically I think he has no option but to upgrade since he wants to play at least on medium settings

Nah theres no 6600gt verison on pci
 
So you are saying you want to share a graphics card between you and your friend, so one card can render two games? :confused: :confused:
