cheap os

Linux is an open source operating system, so you don't necessarily need to pay for it. Head over to www.ubuntu.com and download the ISO for your computers architecture, burn it to a CD, then pop it in and reboot. Ubuntu is probably the easiest of the Linux distributions out there to use especially if you're new to Linux. Ubuntu also has a great community out there that supports the operating system so you'll have no probably finding help on it. The desktop download for Ubuntu is also a live CD which means you can play around with it before you install to your hard drive.

Yes, definitely don't buy it even though it isn't very much. Linux distros, most of them are free and great because they are free. Having to pay for it will make it seem like it's competing for a market share with apple and ms. Definitely download and experiment with a free one to see which one you like best. Many people like many different ones, take a look here for a list of Linux distro's.
