Cheap TV as a monitor?

Hey all,

I'm not a computer gamer or anything, so I don't need super great specs or graphics. What I'm looking for is just a big extra screen for having extra documents on and maybe the occasional youtube video.

Some great sales going on right now with black friday and what not. Saw a 32" Sceptre with the following specs:

Panel
Screen Size 32"
Recommended Resolution 720p
Maximum Resolution 1366 x 768
Aspect Ratio 16:9
Backlight System CCFL
Viewing Angle 178°(H) / 178°(V)
Display Color 16.7 Million
Brightness 420 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio 3000:1
Response Time 6.5ms

At under $250 seems like a pretty awesome deal, but would this work fine as an extra monitor? Thanks!

Yes it probably would, but pay particular attention to the maximum resolution. 1366 x 768 doesn't give you much usable space on the screen compared to many monitors out there. I have a 23" Acer monitor that has a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 and I know it could be had cheaper than that TV. If you still intend to use it as a TV then I would look around a bit more for a TV that's 1080i or 1080p, so you can still have a decent resolution when you use it as a monitor.

I personally would not recommend using a TV as a monitor, for some reason all the TVs ive tried using as a monitor (22" 1080P and a 37" 1080p)the text looked horrible no matter what settings i tried, and it made my eyes dry and sore.

Better off spending your money on a good 1080p monitor...

it will work as second monitor but unless you are using it as a tv I would not recommend it. the resolution would be just over a 15" laptop screen if I am thinking correctly. There should be a lot of monitors that are under $150 this weekend with the sales and all. Look for something that has a full 1080 resolution. You will have quite a bit more space to work with.

Edit: dang beat by two people.

Thanks guys!

Got so caught up in SCREEN SIZE I forgot that all that really matters is resolution.

Scooped up a 24" 1080p HDTV on sale for $150 today. 1920x1080 FTW!

I found a 22" 1080p TV this weekend for $100. Parents bought it and now they use it as a second monitor. Although, they do watch more TV on it that computer related stuff.
