Cheapest i5 upgrade...

Everything came in today, I put it all together, and installed a fresh copy of win7 pro 64bit, and it worked fine, until I tried to install the graphics drivers.

First off it only has vga and dvi, I have a tv going from dvi to hdmi (because the bios only shows on dvi, and I don't have a straight dvi cable for my monitor) and my monitor on vga.

The first time, I just told it to install all the windows updates (including optional) and it installed a driver, and it restarted, and the msi logo comes up, then the windows loading screen, then the dvi goes black and it switches to vga, the it shows the desktop background centered, it appears to be the right resolution, then that goes black, then it makes the log on sound, then the monitor is black and the back light flashes on and off a few times, then the monitor says no signal and the dvi tv goes back to the main logo and starts over.

I went into safe mode and uninstalled the graphics via device manager (and checked the delete driver files box). And booted back up and it was back to its driverless self. So I got the driver off the Intel website, same thing (so I uninstalled it) . So then I downloaded the live update program from msi, which updated the bios and graphics and chipset, same thing. I have tried booting with monitors unplugged, but nothing seems to help. It seems like the first driver did work for a minute, until I tried to turn off the other monitor, but I really don't remember.

It's just the celeron g1610s integrated graphics. Please help!!!

Did you buy it new on amazon using the link I posted or in some other place? Also you can get adapters from dvi to hdmi.

I bought it used like new, the guy said it was only used for a little while. I contacted him and sent him what I said here, and he replied in less than in hour, but this was his reply:

Huh, I am sorry to hear that it is giving you problems. I never had any problems with it. I built the pc with a friend and he knows a bit more about this kinda stuff than I do. I am going to copy and paste this and send it off to him. I'll let you know if he turns up any useful advice.

Keep me in the know.

Thanks.

I also contacted intel, and the rep replied and gave me a link to a processor diagnostic tool, it said it was fine, and they sent me another link to a driver, which also did the same thing.

I messed with it some more today, and it appears that when it shows the desktop centered, it is actually treating it as an extended monitor, and it only shows this when it is asking for permission to run the msi live update that automatically opens, I managed to grab it on the mystery monitor, and pull it to the one I can see, and it looks fine, but it won't let me do any thing until I click yes or no, and then it just goes black. The TV on dvi says no signal, I tried another tv, that would support 1080p if it was just outputting something weird, and they wouldn't show anything either. I also just noticed that if the dvi is unplugged, nothing ever shows on the vga... it doesn't make any sense to me...

I have a cable that goes from dvi to hdmi, but I don't have one that goes straight dvi to dvi. I just ordered one on amazon for $4.11 including shipping.

I guess I'll just see what he has to say, I should have known it wouldn't just work, nothing ever does for me...

I just realized you were talking about a discrete graphics card, I was talking about the intel HD graphics on the processor, I haven't bought a discrete card yet, I want to see what the processor graphics are like first, the specs look comparable to the radeon 5450 I had before.

I just booted into safe mode, and it said the system has recovered from a serious error... apparently it thought it was showing a blue screen somewhere, but it wasn't here...

I don't think I quite understand your problem. Is it that the graphics card drivers won't work? Does the monitor work but the resolution is messed up?

when any driver is installed for the intel HD graphics that are in the cpu, the computer will not show anything past the starting windows screen. I have tried every driver I can find (msi, intel, windows update), and they all do the same thing.

when you turn it on with a driver installed the msi logo and starting windows shows on the dvi, then it switches to the vga, but it only shows the desktop for a second, then the monitor turns on and off a few times, and the computer restarts.

It appears to be a problem with the integrated graphics, and since all the drivers do the same thing, I'm thinking its a hardware problem.

What os are you using, and also could you list the full specs of your pc?

(I said most of this in the 3rd post on the 3rd page)

MSI H61M-P31/W8 motherboard
Intel Celeron G1610 dual core, 2.6ghz stock cooler, not running hot.
Integrated Intel HD graphics
4gb samsung ram (two excatly same 2gb sticks) total of 2 slots
Windows 7 pro 64bit service pack 1 with all updates.
hitachi 160gb 2.5in sata HDD 7200rpm
250 watt PSU, fan running good, not hot

My dvd burner is pata, so I will have to buy a new one, I tried an adapter, but it didn't work.

I would try downloading the drivers directly from intel's website if you haven't done that before. Also try removing one of your ram sticks to see if maybe one of them is causing the problem.

I already tried downloading intels drivers a few times. and I tried removing one stick, I'll try removing the other, I did the windows memory test, and it didn't find any problems though.

Have you installed the chipset driver for the motherboard yet?

http://www.msi.com/service/download/driver-14683.html

I just reinstalled windows 7, and installed every driver on the msi website (graphics last) and it still does the same thing, except now, it never shows the desktop on the vga, because it only did that when it was asking for permission to run an update program.

I also tried every combination of one stick in each slot, and it never has any effect.

Did you try installing the chipset drivers directly from intels website (not mis's website), I had a similar problem with my msi motherboard and I had to install drivers directly from intel's website. Also, is there any way you could try a dedicated video card? Maybe you have some other desktop that has one and you could borrow it?

I tried installing intels chipset driver first, and it still did the same thing. I couldn't get intels driver check to work, so I had to try to find them myself.
I installed this chipset, it says 6 series in the title, but the release notes say series 7 also. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/22153/eng/INF_allOS_9.3.0.1026_PV.exe&lang=eng&Dwnldid=22153&DownloadType=Drivers&OSFullname=Windows+7+(64-bit)*

I can't borrow a card, no one I know has a newer desktop (made in the last 10 years) There's no regular pci slot on this mobo, and as far as I know you can't just get an adapter. I was think about getting a card later, but I didn't want to spend much on it (under $50 preferable even better than that)

If I can't get this working, would it be a bad idea to just get around the problem by buying a discrete card. If its a hardware problem, it might cause other problems later, I can still return the board.

You can actually get a pci express to pci adapter, but they're like $50 so that would be pointless :D. What I would do in your case is I would go to e-bay and get the cheapest (yet still 100% functional) radeon x800/x1600xt because they are ~$13 including shipping and they would allow you to at least see something on the screen. I'll private message you some links so no-one buys them before you have a chance to look at them.
