Check my friends build please

My friend is building a computer, I looked it over his specs and everything seemed to be fine...however I've never built one and don't know much about compatibility issues, so if CF members would be kind enough to review it, that'd be great. Thanks a alot!

CASE

MOBO

GPU

PSU

CPU

RAM (Getting 2 so total of 4 gigs)

HDD

CD/DVD DRIVE

OS

I'm mostly worried about the mobo/psu/case all working/fitting together...I've heard that people have had problems with getting the psu/mobo to fit in certain cases...

It will be used for image editing, some video editing, and gaming. After reviews and benchmarks, the GPU has been changed from the 2900XT to the 8800gts

Ok, most looks good. But if your getting that mobo i would get a 8800GTS or 8800GTX card. The ram will not do, you need atleast 2gb and i would suggest Corsair XMS 2 (2x1gb) or some G. Skill (2x1gb), that ram you have listed is just way too cheap and not enough for a high end system. The cd drive is fine but you could get better like the SATA drive, LINK. Also i would suggest 64bit vista.

okay, and will there be any issues with compatibility using 64 bit vista?

(And yeah...I figured the ram was crappy for that price lol)

List updated

The ram you listed wont work, it need to be 240pin DDR2-800

Okay, I updated it again...

A few questions now: is it better to buy 4X1gig or 2X2gig?

Also, the lower the latency the better right? Can I not get anything less than 4 with 240 pin?

Right, lower latency the better. I would get 4x1gb, its not like your going to need any more. Since your getting 64bit good, just letting you know that with 32bit you can only use about 3.25gb of ram, with 64 you can use up to 8gb of ram since that is most motherboards limits.

i would disagree with the 8800 vs 2900 deal, the 8800's do not support virtualization so the ati card beats them in capabilities

and the power supply is a great choice, i have it its perfect in every way i can tell

2900's are overrated IMHO, why? they don't beat even a 8800gts in games, they produce a lot more heat, they are mega power hungry, ati catalyst is a piece of crap and lately most brands for ati have been sucking pretty bad, if you do a research on this forum you'll find that from each 10 persons having troubles with a graphic card, 7 are ati, 3 nvidia

I'm going by benchmarks...idk both the 2900 and the 8800gts won certain benchmarks...it seems that the 8800gts did better at higher resolutions

I'm not sure why you are getting the QX6700. Do you plan to overclock? If so, the QX6700 has the same FSB as the Q6600, at twice the price. Unless you're concerned about the stepping, I would go with the Q6600.

Installing long GPU's in a mid tower case can be a hassle. Although I don't know the dimensions of the ATI 2900 GPU, expect a challenege when installing this card into a mid tower case. Good Luck! :)

Thx, and yeah I noticed these a little while ago, so the CPU & GPU have now changed.

That looks better. :) Are you gonna use the Intel heatsink/fan?

There isn't much difference between a 320mb and a 640mb 8800, unless you are playing on resolutions like 1650 or above, btw get the evga since they have a step up program and is cheaper as well, the step up program allows you to "upgrade" to a better card by paying the difference between the old and the new one plus shipping the only cons is that only works once and it works only within 90 after buying the card

I agree. You shouldn't pay more for the BFG card when the EVGA is basically the same GPU, and you receive the option to "step up" to the GTX or Ultra in the future, if you choose.

The core speed is slower though isnt it? Or does this matter very much?

The core clock on the BFG card is about 80 MHz faster. Yes, it matters. However, you can probably overclock the EVGA GPU to the BFG speed. Do some research, and save some money.

Not a huge issue - that's just a factory overclock, which you can do yourself, certainly not worth that sort of a price premium. I'd either save the money with the EVGA 8800GTS, or add another $50 for an 8800GTX: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127281 (might want to check whether there's space in the case, though)

i may end up doing that...(getting a gtx...im not sure, i'll look into more tommorrow, as im gong to sleep now...
