It all totaled $1680 w/ shipping and I got most stuff one step down because I like to get the tried and true products over spanking new so the bugs will be taken care of. Once I get my order (prob like tuesday or wednesday - march 29/30) I will put up some actual pics of my stuff and then on my day off on friday, which happens to be april 1st I will put it all together and show you guys in a video on youtube.

Later,
Alex

I would say Very nice build should run really well...I like the i7 with 6GB of ram those components will play very nice with each other

hey Mihir, yea man I'm relying pretty much on youtube vids for the assembly. but the bios is more mysterious to me. some people in a previous thread I made gave me a bit better info than my limited knowledge of that stuff but if you can add more towards some tips I can use for assembly and bios thatd be awesome.

The only thing for which you will need to made changes in your bios will be changing the boot device to DVD-ROM for installing the OS and then changing it back to HDD after it has completed the setup.
After the OS has been installed update the bios by downloading the latest update from ASUS's support site.

As for assembly. The most important part and the part where people can go wrong is applying the thermal paste. If you are using the preapplied paste then it doesnt matter. But if you are using an aftermarket paste then make a rice grain sized drop at the centre of the CPU and then fix the heatsink and also dont lift up the heatsink after you have installed the heatsink which would lead to formation of air bubbles.

Remember to connect the Heatsink Fan's power connector to the motherboard.

ok heres a newb question: how to I get into bios? before and after os install

the thermal paste I've down before on an xbox so I have some experience in that lol. good note for the air bubble thing though :good:

Dont use the paste you used for Xbox.Use something good quality like the Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic Cooling MX-2.

You can checkout the motherboard manual.
Usually its Delete.

The A50 comes with some compound so I'll use that.

So press delete upon startup?

For My motherboard I press delete.Maybe different for your motherboard.
Checkout your motherboard manual.

yes use that compound which comes with the A50.

haha thanks man, and for the comment on youtube too.

Theres some things I need messing around with:

1. The current resolution is 1920x1080, and the screen doesn't fit completely on my monitor (24in) so there is some black areas between the screen and the edge of the monitor, how do I bring the resolution to 1920x1200? I currently just scaled the monitor up to fill in the areas as a temporary fix. I installed VGA drivers but still the option on my control panel is maxed at 1080.

2. During BIOS I see the ram speed is 1066, however the ram I have is 1600 mhz not clocked. When I entered BIOS to change it to 1600 the lowest option was over 4000  and it notified me that I would need to unlock my cpu, what's the deal with this?

Blue screen of Death (possible ram?)

Wow, I am coming back to my old thread (nice to see the memories) over a year later for a possible issue on my comp.

But as a side note: the mouse(or any upgraded ones I guess) and the case I bought is awesome. I haven't used the comp as often as I thought lol but still love it.

Now the issue: I use google chrome as web browser and almost everytime I go on it after a while I get the "aw,snap" page shockwave crashed. This doesn't happen on my Dell laptop...ever. I also occasionally get a blue screen which I managed to snap a pic of the other day (within the 3 milliseconds that thing is on... so quick) it automatically restarts.

Now, one day a friend came over and saw my comp and liked it, asked questions and I told him I had 6gb of ram (see my first post of the ram I have). He looked at computer properties and it said I had 4..... I was like hold up, I opened up the side case and confirmed I had 3 sticks of 2gb ram sticks in there. So I mark it on my phone to take a look into it another weekend. But when I actually did the computer said I had 6gb....

So if you guys can help if that's the possible hardware failure that gives me the blue screen thatd be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

Wow, thanks for the thread bump! :P

Run Memtest86 on your PC for several hours and see if it finds any problems with RAM. After about 8 hours, stop the test, and remove on your DIMMs and keep repeating.

started memtest86+

Thanks Spirit,

(how the hell can I resize these images in the forum? I'm using picasa for now)

I went ahead and ran memtest86+ before I left to work. By the time I come back later today it should have ran for 11 hours. Here is the pic after a couple passes I think, but we'll see what it says after the total elapsed time:

When I started the comp today to get the memtest the dam thing restarted again..

I believe the ASUS motherboard I have is doing the built in protection of restarting if a problem is detected, but will have to check the manual again to make sure.

11 hours of MemTest86+

Ok, well I guess my computer passed the 11 hour test of MemTest86+

Could this test have found the fault in the ram? aka missed anything?

Or should I start looking at other components that may cause my blue screen issue?

Thanks,
Alex

Take out two of your sticks and run it with one and see if you get the same issue. Test each stick individually.

Bad Dimm

I think this is the only time I will be happy finding a fault in my computer.

I tested each stick in the slots they were put in. (for example, instead of putting the first stick in the first slot, then the second stick into the first slot etc. to check the sticks, I instead tested the first stick in the first slot, then the second stick in the second slot, and the third stick in the third slot. Since those slots are their "home" slots anyway) Not sure if it would make a diff but I like the consistency.

The following pictures are the results of each ram stick I have tested:

First stick in A1 slot
1.JPG

Second stick in B1 slot
2.jpeg

Third stick in C1 slot
3.jpeg

So I believe maybe to check the stick again in a different slot and a good stick in the affected slot to be sure its the sticks and not the slot on the mobo that is at fault.

If the the stick is confirmed at fault I am assuming I must buy another stick.
