Chkdsk and System Restore Errors

Recently when starting up my computer I have been getting a message that is saying that one of the disks needs to be checked for consistency. Then when I allow it to check, it states that it "cannot open volume for direct access". "Autocheck cannot run due to an error caused by recently installed software package" (Nothing installed that I am aware of). Then it tells me to use system restore to an earlier date. When I perform that, then I get an message stating that "System restore did not complete successfully...." "An unspecified error occurred during System Restore (0xc0000022)."

I tried system restore on a different date and still get the same message.

Any ideas?

System restore is not very reliable, never was, never will be. Your best bet is to run a diagnostic on the hard drive using the hard drive manufacturer's disk diagnostic program. What brand of drive is it?

Thanks for validating my concern with restore. I don't think I ever had a successful attempt at it. Anyway the brand is Western Digital.

OK I figured out how to write to the disk and now I have booted to it. But what do I choose on the menu? It's a DOS window titled "Hiren's BootCD 15.2".

I ran the windows version last night (both the quick and extended scans). Tried rebooting this AM and still get the same error message. Any suggestions what to try next?

Dos tools, hard drive utilities, western digital diagnostic. From memory so hopefully it's right. At work currently can help later today though.

OK, thanks. I ran the Windows version again, as administrator, the extended version and here are the results:

You do only have 1 drive attached to the system right? no usb drives or anything? The windows version isn't as reliable as the dos version. Does it list a drive letter that its testing when its checking on bootup?

There is only one HD attached. There is a CD drive and USB ports but nothing in them. When you say a "drive letter"; are you referring to when I try the Windows version or when I bootup using the disk that I created?

When you boot the computer and it tells you disk needs to checked for consistency. It should give you a drive letter. Just trying to confirm there is only 1 drive attached.

It doesn't give a disk designation. I took a picture of the screen but I do not know how to upload it onto this site since it is too large of a file. I can try and type all of the verbage if that will help.

That would be a folder listed in system volume information folder on your c drive. Probably why system restore won't work. Try this. Go into system restore settings and turn off system restore, click apply, then go back and turn it back on, click apply. Reboot the machine and see what happens. Might not help but worth a try.
