Chkdsk and System Restore Errors

Tried, but still get the error message. Could there be something wrong with the HD? It's about 4 years old. Used only for minor Office stuff, Quicken, pictures, and surfing.

I would probably say the drive is starting to fail. Have you tried running the dos version of the test yet? I don't really trust windows version of the utility.

I was afraid of that. I started to run the dos but wasn't sure which choice. You had mentioned in an earlier comment that you tried from memory to walk me through (see quote below), but when I tried it, I did not find the western digital diagnostics choice. I'll be glad to try it, if you steer me in the right direction.

Also, I've been thinking of upgrading this computer anyway. This site helped me build it several years ago and I was thinking of asking for help to make some changes (i.e. ss hd, new video card, motherboard, etc.). I'll post the question in the correct section, but am interested in your opinion. Money is not an issue.

"Dos tools, hard drive utilities, western digital diagnostic. From memory so hopefully it's right. At work currently can help later today though."

OK, so here are some screenshots of the program when loading from hirens boot cd. Just follow the images.

You want #2 on the last image. On the next screen just hit the esc key.

Then press y for the next screen.

Then you will see this screen.

hit enter on extended test and on the next screen press R to start the test and then let me know what the results say.

yes as a lot of time quick scan comes back good but the extended scan comes back with errors.

Unfortunately, it looks like your in for a reinstall of the OS. If that don't solve it, then replace the hdd.

John, not sure what happened, but I tried uninstalling and then re-installing Avast and the issue has gone away. I'm also posting my fix in case anyone else runs into this problem.

I was looking on some Microsoft blogs and someone who had the same issue, tried the same procedure with their anti-virus (it wasn't Avast). Since that was something simple and fairly quick, I tried it with my Avast. Seems to work so far, but given the age, should probably still look to changing the hd.
