choices for new build

i'm looking at buying a new computer as soon as possible. right now, im stuck with a dell dimension 4100 (256MB ram, pci graphics card, you get the idea), and i desperately need a new computer, for gaming and everything else. My time table is pretty much all of july, minus the last week. I will be visiting the states during this time for three weeks, and if i don't get a computer then I won't be getting a new one for at least a year. My main question, and what i need to decide now, is AM2 vs socket 939. I was looking at an opteron 165 to overclock, cpu cooler, vga cooler, 2gb ram. I am definetly looking to overclock (first time) and I'd like to know price wise what's the best deal. Should i go with the 939 now and wate till nicer stuff comes out for AM2, (as well as watching out for the bugginess factor of new technology) then buy a new mobo and some ddr 800 ram, or should I go AM2 now? I have only 1600 dollars max max max, so please I could use any advice on socket type and on good components for that socket.

I was looking at the same situation. But now im going with AM2 for future proof and DDr2 ram. THe prices are falling on all AMD processors.

I personally would go with the socket 939, and try to go for duel-core.

If i go the 939 route, then ill go with an opteron 165, and upgrade the cpu and vga coolers, i hear the opterons overclock very nice, as well as 2 x 1GB G.Skill RAM

What setup are you going for with your AM2 build? I know I want to upgrade, do you think socket 939 will be dead soon?
