Riteo. I am planning on having a rough estimate off about £235 in cash ready for spending on whatever i want, i have chosen to go with a new mobo and CPU.

Perhaps i'll go with AMD 64 this time round. And a good make like ASUS or Gigabyte, no shoddy cheap stuff here OK.

I want speed and raw RAW power. Not necessarily in games but normal working, video editing, etc... It will have to have AGP 8x im afraid, not in the frame of mind to upgrade to PCI-e graphics just yet. DDR400 matches my current speed so that will do fine.

At least 3 PCI slots. Not sure if i want PCI-e, only if standard PCI cards work in PCI-e slots, do they??

4 USB, Serial, Parallel, 1394. All the standard stuff. Preferably SATA but with good old PATA still there. Seeing as NONE of my drives are SATA, but i would like to future proof.

Probably looking and either LGA775 for Pentium or 939 for AMD 64.

Any suggestions within budget or hints or known conflicts with certain boards are all welcome.

oh don't think they make boards with both agp and pci-e

No? I know it's hard to see but there is an APG slot to the right of that PCIe 6800 Ultra

Also I saw a VIA board with both, can't seem to find a link now though. edit... Don't expect to find many AGP & PCIe boards, epox has one for P4s or is supposed to but theres not a lot of details about it on any of their sites (I found a short thing here http://www.epox.nl/products/view.php?product_id=353)

For now all PCIe boards have standard PCI slots (usually 3, some have more/less).

You can probably find that ULi board I posted in Asia, and maybe eastern Europe but I don't think it will ever see light in North America
 
Ok, thanks. Any more suggestions. I am by no means an AMD man, pretty much an Intel fan boy but i though i should give the opposition a try out. Can anyone give me a rundown of what all the differnt cores are and what they are best for (AMD that is, not Intel). Thanks.
 
of the 3 cores under the brand amd64 3200+, which are newcastle, winchester, venice. The venice core is is known to be the best overclocker
 
Right, thanks. Venice it is then. Thats the AMD solution out of the way, if i decide to go that way then thats prob what i would choose. Now for the Pentium solution, any ideas. Prob LGA775, i leave the rest up to you...
 
well if it the same budget then you looking at the p4 530, maybe the 540 (bit over budget). Both oc good

Just a note on the Venice. You can oc easily to about 2.6Ghz. It can go further but I prefer not to due to greater voltage raises and so on.

Yeah I am a proponent of the Venice as many of you may have noticed. However, you would need a good motherboard to make it go far. Mine for example is a decent one which can pull it off, but DFI mobos are usually much better.

well that pretty much simplifies our task for the mobo... MSI K8n neo2 platinum.

Gigabyte might have one... they do this funky wierd crap from time to time :)

Except we both know, just because one person can (or a lot of people) ... doesnt mean everyone can
 
Just a note, the boards that do have AGP and PCI-E, are only good for stock use. Don't expect overclocking if you get one. Read most any review on the few boards that do support both. I didn't see anyone mention this earlier, so i thought i'd jsut let you know.
 
The ULi Athlon 64 board with AGP and PCIe16x slots can pull a 400MHz HTT clock with some CPUs.
