Choosing a heatsink..

Those links dont work for me, but a HSF i will reccomend is a Thermaltake Big Typhoon. It reduced my idle temp from 40 Degrees to 26 Degrees (with the windows open on a cold night :D )

Its BIG, so check your case dimetions against that of the typhoon.

I have the same comp....and spent days with the same Q..

Ok so first things first hate to brag but i think i have a better idea then the others not saying that any of you are wrong but i spent so much time on this same question and this is what i found out.. your first heatsink is great but its the same size as the third heatsink so clearance is another issue as for temps and decible ratings its exactly the same as the third only drop those temps by 2 extra degrees and its the same decible rating as your stock heatsink.........Your second heatsink as most after market heatsink has a backing on it which you have to take everything off your mobo and set it up, don't worry its a breeze and takes literally minutes. This heatsink is as well big but not 2 big and on this heatsink you can install a 100mm fan and if u wanna a second. This heatsink drops the idle temp by 5 degrees and load temp by 9 degrees and is 6 decibles quieter then the stock heatsink.......Last but not least the third heatsink is not bad but size is a bad issue seeing how this heatsink is made mostly for amd mobo's and it can't actually be installed on "most" intel systems as for cooling it approx drops the cpu temp by 6 degrees' on idle and 11 degrees on 100 load compared to a stock heatsink as well its load and is only 1 decibel quieter then a stock heatsink

And as for comparance all 3 have been in Maximum pc and your first heatsink got an 8, your 3rd got a 7 and the hyper got the only 10+ and as for the big typhoon it recieved an 8 and has the exact same specs as the hyper 6 except for decible its 1 decible louder and last but not least like all other thermaltakes size issues so check size specifications...

I personally use the hyper 6+ even tho it doesn't seem to be the best i have tested them all out on my computer and the one area that all other fail except for the hyper 6+ is overclocking the cooling doesn't seem to fair as well and there are drastic differences when you oclock, and i recently posted about overclocking and the hyper 6+ did the best

http://www.computerforum.com/showthread.php?t=32489

and if your wondering how did i possibly test all of them out...a friend of mine works at a computer shop and helped me out cuz i bought most of my parts from one store but final decision is ultimatly up to you but i would strongly side with the hyper 6+

Thanks for that so the hyper 6+ worked the best?
Was it on your Pentium D 840?
Its weird I thought the THERMALTAKE TOWER 112 Heatpipe would be on top being all copper.
Isn’t copper the best for heatsinks?

copper is best...

To tell you the truth i thought the same thing as well, the first thing i looked for was an all copper set-up but i found out a few things first is that the most important thing is that the base has to be copper, since copper conducts heat better then aluminum. And all of the heatsinks have a copper base so that makes them all equal. The next similar thing between all four is that they all have copper heatpipes. Heatpipes are sealed with a conduit liquid inside, and this liquid transfers the heat from the base to the fins. The liquid evaporates and traels up the heat pipe, as soon as the vapor has movedfar enough away from the heat soursce. It condenses back into liquid and dreains down to thebase of the heat pipe. This constantly happens as long as the comp is running. The next important factor are the fins and i am not to sure why the thermaltake one doesn't blow all the others away in this part since it is the only one that is all copper, my assumption is that copper is alot harder to mold then aluminum "i have only been told this" not 100% sure, so it might be a designing flaw, but as for real life testing i fully stand behind the cooler master hyper 6+. And yes i do have a pentium D 840. One more thing i did wanna mention is that the only other system that i wanted more then the hyper 6+ is the aquagate mini 120mm..

only problem for me is that my comp was running at +88 cuz i had a defective intel heatsink and i couldn't wait the 2 week period for one so i went with the cooler master heatsink but i am sure that if u do go with the thermaltake 112 it will do fine they are all so similar that i don't think that one or the other will "suck" but for oclockin, the hyper 6+ out-performs the rest and btw what u oclock ur comp 2?

lol at myself I have no pc I’m in the process of learning/study computers right now, so I can choose my first pc in a week or so
hopefully with 2gig OCZ ram very low timings, fastest mobo out that supports 1ghz ram speeds maybe 2 7800gtx if not 1 will do the fastest cpu I can get my hands on maybe dual. So lots of learning to do

I’ll post a new thread about aluminum and copper
