Choosing a motherboard??

Choosing a motherboard seems to be the most difficult part of assembling a new system.... I dont suppose I could get some prime motherboard picks from you folks??? :D

AMD or Intel?

What is the fastest chipset?

 stay grounded, get a buzzzz

ZAP!
Righto folks, thanks!
skizzzz

Well first what is your budget and what will you be doing on the pc?
basic "rules" are:
Amd is better for games
Intel is better for applications
Sli is expensive but really pro in games
Raid is good...

Nforce 4 is a really good chipset (but get a least Nforce ultra (it goes normal, ultra, sli (sli being the best)))

I'm not quite sure what a good answer for budget is because I really dont know the price of computers... Well I dont know the price of a topnotch custom computer that would rule any dell 'special'...

What is a good - Motherboard+Processor+Memory combo for one of these topnotch customs... 3Ghz is about standard these days?
:D

No that is not (well actually depending on what you want to do)
It comes with a 3200+ processor which is not the most cost effective and nowadays just slightly above avrage. Also that would only be good in games. Also it only has the Nforce 4 chipset (instead of Nforce 4 ultra) The Normal Nforce is very stripped down and not nearly as good as the ultra version.

The price of a crap pc is 1000$ medium is 2000-3000$ high end is 4000-6000$ Insane would be 7000+.

These prices avrage for its class mice/monitors. Big monitors and speakers would cost up too 20 000$ more.

By crap I mean centirio (don't know how it is spelled) w 256Mb of ram and maby a slow video card.

By medium I mean 512-1024 mb of ram with a nice 3+Ghz (or amd equivilent) processor and mid range to low high end graphics card.

By high end I mean Top processor, 1-2Gb of ram, the best vid card (probbably 2 of them in sli)... you get the Idea (the best of everything).

Insane is just high end but with watercooling, a few TB of storage... high end insane is like sli dual opteron (1500$ mobo + 2x1500$ proc + 2X 700$ vid card...)

I'm sure by topnotch custom you don't mean high end insane :P so I sugest you put up how much you wan't to spend.

Also, It is important that you tell us what you will be doing on the pc as different components do better at different things.

3Gz is not standard. Really It depends on the brand. Amd's top processor runs at 2.6 Ghz and intels at 3.8Ghz. Even though there is a 1.2 Ghz difference the amd can still tie or beat the intel. Ghz is not an accurate mesurment of computing power so I sugest you rate processors against each other or by what you want them to do.

Put up some more info and we can help you more.

When I think of top notch for gaming computer this is what I think of. A athlon 64 3500+ or athlon 64 3800+. A nforce 4 ultra motherboard or SLI from a good brand(MSI, DFI, MSI, ASUS, gigibyte, ABIT). 1 gb of good ram(cas 2). geforce 6800GT video card.

3ghz would be standard if you go intel. For amd they perform alot better then a intel going at the same speed so we talking 2.xghz for amd.

Your prices are a bit high he can do a lot better then what you have up there. I have what I consider a high end system and only paid $2500 for it.

What i'm running right now is an intel p4 2ghz 256 ram dell demension 2350... so whatever chipsets and whatnot go along with that model

I dont game much, so I'm not going to need ultra-hardcore gaming support.
However I do run lots of resource hogg programs, at the same time, stuff like max2plus, macromedia suite ... along with having many running instances of internet explorer, filesharing etc...

Ol bessy here has been holding out mighty well, but I'm starting to get concerned with the accumulation of seconds I spend waiting for her to do what I say...
Time is money so I gotta take her out back and shoot her...
I will be salvaging everything that I can, like the radion 7200 or whatever I purchased for dual monitor support, cd burner etc..

I'm not sure if I'm facing the right direction, but this is what I think I need....

-a motherboard
-a processor
-ram
-a case
-a fan or somthing...

...If i get those.. i can stick them in a big pot with the hard drive some wires, and a cd burner... presto...a new computer...with a glow in the dark sticker on top

oh my mistake I was thinking gaming in my recomendations. Well it sounds like what you want is a pentium(better for multitasking). How much money do you want to spend?

O sorry, I am canadien and the prices are in cdn$'s. In canada 6800u can cost 700$ :(.

Back on topic deffinetly a pentium and 1gig of ram. Do you want multi monitors? Also tell us how much storage (hard drive wise) you think you will need and hom much cash you have.

Motherboard's always seem to be the hardest choice of parts. After you get the mobo down the memory and CPU just sort of fall into place. But yeah like MG said you're gonna want a P4. Sorry I can't really be much more of a help but I'm super tired now, I can help you a little better tomorrow.

AMD or Intel?
Intel. AMD hasnt been around in the motherboard business much.

What is the fastest chipset?
Its a good tossup between the nForce3Ultra and the nForce4Ultra/SLI

Raid is good...
For the few people who actually make use of it.

Your prices are a bit high he can do a lot better then what you have up there
Dont stress that too much. When you gotta pay for your own stuff you can easily find lower prices.

LOL no they dont. Ok correct, not if you realize they shouldnt cost that much

Have a look at a Pentiurm4 530 and a ASUS based Intel915 board, whack a 1GB of memory on there and you can skimp out on the video card :) This does depend on the budget though.

Well... I was sorta exagerating, only the big foot gaming WC version costs that much, It is pre oc'ed really high (for a pre oc'ed card). Normal ones cost about 500-600$

I don't know what your definition of a crap PC is, but I custom made mine for under a thousand and it is playing Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 easily. And this 'Insane' you speak of is not for the computer, it is the paint job....such as Falcon, they put a lot of high-quality paint on their cases, and they will do custm paint jobs....but just because it says $7000 doesn't always mean that it is going to be better than the $5000 PC hardware and performance wise.

well,.. i would consider my pc here ad budget/medium on,. but then consider that it didnt evn cost me 150$ :D

ok.. except the monitor.. i already had that one ;)

It is more of an avrage kind of think using only canada's retail prices (which are in canadian$). If you buy stuff cheap off e-bay you are sure to get a cheaper pc.
