Choosing a new computer...

Hi, I need help choosing a new computer. The system I've had now is a few years old, but it has always been a nightmare and it just keeps getting worse. So, I've decided just to invest in a new system.

Before I got the computer I have now, I did check reviews, and thought I was buying a good computer. So, I just want to get something that is somewhat better, graphics card don't matter because I have a very nice Nvidia card, but I want it where I can write cd/dvds. Money limit is around $1,300.

My system at the moment is:

Compaq Presario SR1030NX
3000+ (2.16 GHz) AMD Athlon XP processor
512 MB memory
160 GB hard drive

So please tell me of a good computer. Thank you!:)

this exact moment in time is not a great time to be buying a computer.

Intel are ready to introduce a new processor to the market that will be high performing and very affordable. At the same time AMD will be reducing the prices of their current lines to compensate for this.

The release dates are just under a month away now so any prices that we could give you for a system could be bettered in a big way within a month.

My advice, if you have had that system for a few years now then it would be well worth holding onto it for another month and seeing what the pc market does first :)

Hi, Thank you for your reply, jimmymac. In your point of view, is AMD Athlon's better or worse than Intel? Hmm, definately a thought worth considering..what brand of computer do you consider to be the best? Thank you.

as ku-sama said, the athlon is the better processor out at the moment but intel are due to release core 2 duo which will be much better than the current AMD range and at an affordable price (quote a strange thing from intel being affordable)

Well worth giving it a month or so to see what happens, last thing you want to do is buy a cracking pc only to find its 25% less in just a months time :)

Thank you both for your advice, I think I'm going to try to hold off that long. So no exact date when the core 2 duo is released? lol, Sounds pretty interesting. Do you know what the GHz will be on it? Thank you!!:D

Well still looking around, might try to hold off, but might just go ahead and get it over with. I found a HP Pavilion but I don't know if that's a good computer, a so-so computer, or what. I don't know to go with Dell, Alienware, HP or what, totally lost in that part. lol, I just want a computer I don't have to take to the shop almost every week. :)

HP pavilion info:

Intel Pentium 4 with Hyper-Threading (3.06 GHz)
512 MB (Can expand up to 4 GB though)
160 GB
Lightscribe 16 DVD/CD writing ability

What are you planning on using the system for? The one you have now still has plenty of potential left in it, and you can easily add a DVD-RW drive. If your issues are software related, simply reformatting may solve them.

The HP you're looking at is better, but not enough so to justify the upgrade IMO. How much does it cost? It's certainly not worth $1300.

graphics card don't matter because I have a very nice Nvidia card
It might - Is it an AGP, PCI or PCI-E card? You'll need to make sure that the new computer will support it. My guess, given the age, would be AGP, which is not supported by the majority of new motherboards.

i can understand this, but wont the processors be the only thing changin in price? the entire computer wont change much, and he can buy a budget processor now until conroe comes out. then buy an X2
