Choosing an Xp disk?

OK, my family PC is really in need of a complete format and reinstalled. Problem is I cannot do this because my friend that built the PC used an XP PRo disk 5 years ago, and I do not have that disk.

I want to do a clean wipe and then install everything from new. Also, I will be building a new PC next year and want an XP disk that I can install now, and then install it on my new PC next year.

Possible? I am only wanting the cheapest XP Home edition instead of PRO.

If you want to install it on two computers, you should go for retail. OEM only allows on one computer, and if you upgrade the hardware it may not recognize the pc it ran on.

So with retail, I go put it on multiple PC's? I guess that is worth the money.

So after I format my PC and it basicly starts off only with the black Dos screen, all I will need is a Windows disk?

I already have all the stuff I want backed up, now just a Windows disk is all that stands in my way.

With one XP Pro retail disk, you'll need to pay M$ for a license for each computer on which you install it. You may end up saving money with volume licensing... and for that you need to contact M$.

From what I can see, you need to be a corporate, educational, or government entity to take advantage of this.

Thanks for all the help. So buying an 85.00 XP OEM would allow me to just install it on this one PC. Can I re install that on the same PC as many times as I want.

So with the retail, which seems to be about 60.00 or so more than OEM, I can just keep buying product codes? How much are the new codes?
