Hey everyone.

I'm a senior at high school, looking to head off to college soon, and my parents told me I can get parts to make a computer for christmas this year. I'm looking for someone to help me. Hopefully someone with a lot of expertise in computers, because trust me, I basically have no idea what the hell I'm doing; help would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to waste this opportunity, but I need to "build" one in the next week or so, so my parents can order it in time for me to get it for christmas. So, is anyone up for helping me? Again, thank you for everything.

Hope to hear from you soon.

how much can you spend on it, with a new computer Core 2 Duo is one of the best price: performance ratio around so get it

Are you going to be gaming???

I hope to spend around 800-900 (my parents are paying for 600, and i never really have that much money in the bank...gas sucks) and i am looking to mainly be playing games...I realize that a core 2 duo will be too much money, and the AMD athlon 64 3800+ venice seems that it will be just what i need. what is your experience? thanks for your help.

You should be in the range of the Core 2 Duo E6300, which costs about $180 ish.

haha yeah the first year of college is going to be rather boring for me...all my AP classes took most classes away, but i still have some pre-requisites to fulfill. just planning ahead! haha but really, do you think the dual core processor is a good investment? what are the positives? any negatives?

Change it a little with your slightly higher budget, etc.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 w/ Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
Gigabyte GA-965P-S3
Patriot 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 667
Seagate Barracuda 160GB w/ SATA2, 8MB cache, 7200RPM
Sapphire X1950XT (Better than the 7950GT)
Antec Sonata 2 Case w/ Antec 450w PSU and $50 MIR! (Great PSU, great case, great price @ $50 for PSU+Case)

Total: $818 before $50 Mail-in-rebate, but without Shipping/Handling.

im sorry, but can you tell me a little more about them? what is so attractive about them?

Dual core processors allow you to run more programs at once. In addition, many games are starting to utilize both cores, so soon you will be at a big disadvantage if you don't have a dual core processor.

There all good parts, there really isn't a bad thing about anyone, well maybe the PSU with the case but I'm not really sure how good it is.

the HDD could be bigger
320GB for $95 or
250GB for $75

I totally agree about getting a bigger Hard drive, though in my eyes the case and PSU are adequate. I didn't include an optical drive, either. It all depends what he wants to spend.

There is never such thing as too much HDD space. The 250GB will do but the 320GB would be nice. I wasn't sure about the PSU but yeah it doesn't look bad.

ok, thanks everyone for the help!

so, now for a barrage of questions:

1) Will that lite-on play and read all cds and dvds? is it a good investment?

2) can someone please find a hard drive like you are talking about for me? be it 250 or 320GB.

3)Ram...who is the best? i probably want a gig total, but which route should I go? 2x512mb or 1x1gb? what company?

4) the motherboard...im really not going to want to overclock at all or anything, i just want everything to work. i may add a graphics card in the future, so what is one that has that option? (to have 2 total.)

5) the graphics card...this will be my biggest investment in the computer...which one? what is one of the top, yet cheapest ones right now? i want a hot one.

6) does AMD make dual core processors? from my time on computer boards(not very long, i realize haha) everyone says "go amd" and to just forget about intel. which road should i take? also, if amd does, can someone pick one out for me?

7)will the PSU that comes with the case work for all this? will it power everything?

8) is that case even a good one? is there a better one with a better psu maybe, for even a little more money?

WOW. thank you ANYONE who takes the time to answer those. I will respect and appreciate anyone who does. Please help! I do need to order by the 19th. thank you guys so much!

hope to hear from someone soon,

-Ian
