Chromebook For School

I was looking at buying a tablet but then started thinking that a laptop may be more practical. My accounting classes frequently use excel although a fair amount of computer work is down on the textbook publisher website.

Can a chromebook use the web version of excel smoothly? I need to be able to input commands and utilize a few of their analysis functions for statistics. Overall it is basic math.

If a chromebook can do this or even a nexus tablet it may pull me away from buying a windows laptop that will largely see only a semster or so of use. After that it would be used while sitting on the couch watching TV, etc. THat is why a tablet seemed more practical. Size, portablility and simplicity were my goals.

If you only need it for one semester can you use a computer lab?

That is really my best bet.

Just planning on getting a 10" tablet for home and put up with the lab. No sense in buying a laptop that wont be useful in 5 months.

Now to decide between the Nexus ten and ipad.

I can't really help you there. I am not a tablet guy. If you are looking in the $300-$600 range I would look at the Samsung Chromebook or a lower end Windows laptop. Toss Open Office on there are you are good to go. I just don't really see the point of a tablet. Personal preference I guess.

I didn't see the point for a good while. I recently set up an iPad for my grandparents. After using it a few hours I am seeing the benefits. Most of my computer use is web browsing. Otherwise it is gaming and I have a desktop for that. Figure why not have a smaller more portable device to surf the internet etc.

Fair enough. Just my thoughts.

I have an Android Phone and I love the OS so far. I like android better for the system but I am not a heavy mobile user. Less money and more open. Can you test out the Android tablet at all? iOS devices are really good as well. I just think that if I wanted to spend $600 on a mobile device I would rather have a laptop. The smaller form factor is not enough of a benefit to me when I could have a keyboard and an OS that is not limited to an app store.

Like I said before I am not really an expert when it comes to mobile stuff but that is how I would look at it.

I can test out the nexus 7. The 10 I haven't found locally.

My phone is a nexus 4 so I am very used to android and use a lot of the google apps. Plus it is $100 less for the 16 GB version compared to the ipad.

Ipads are nice, but if you already have a nexus 4, i would just get a nexus 10. They sync together and you dont have to rebuy apps

Yes a chrome book will work, I have a Samsung chrome book 303 and google docs is about on par with MS office.
