Chromebook Laptop & Internet Connection

My sister bought her first computer and its a Acer Chromebook. She will use it just for Facebook, emails and web browsing. She also has Dish Network and there internet service where they installed another dish to get that.

I know nothing about Dish's internet service. She plugged her Chromebook in and within a couple of minutes she was connected to the internet but she said there is no cable connected(except power cord)to her Chromebook.

Now was her Chromebook able to make the internet connection on its own? I thought she would have to enter some info to set up the wireless connection. Sorry for the dumb question but i'm lost here. Thanks for your input!

If there is no cable connection then she is connecting wireless. I'm not familiar with chromebooks but its sounds like it will automatically connect to any unsecured network?

No they do not auto connect, when she first turned on the chromebook one of the first things you do is connect to a network as this is a must for the device to be able to do anything, it is part of the setup process when first configuring the device. It might be a unsecured network and then all she did was click on her network name and it connected. She may want to call dish to have them come setup a WEP key as they should have done this from the beginning.

Will be checking this out with her today. I told her that since this is your first computer you will have to learn most things as you go. At least that is the way for me. With this computer forum and youtube you can pretty much get any question you might have answered.

Eww, WPA2 or bust.

But yeah, she would have had to select the network and may have joined some random open one nearby.
