I'm getting ready to do a clean reinstall of Windows XP. Having never done this before, I'm curious as to how to get Internet Explorer (or other browser software) back on my computer after the clean reinstall. Its my understanding that after the reinstall, all files except for Windows will be deleted from my computer. If I no longer have a browser on my computer, how will I be able to log onto the internet to download a browser?

In windows you it comes with internet explorer 6. But you can do a fresh install of windows and still keep your my documents etc..... but if you want just reinstall and a do a reformat as well.....
If the XP disk is one released without SP1 you will see IE 5.5 since IE 6 was later included in the first service pack. Once XP is reinstalled IE 7 is now seen as part of the regular updates for XP.
The current Windows directory itself will be removed completely with a fresh install. A reformat of the drive itself that option not seen with the XP installer would wipe the drive clean. Are you running into problems where you need to reinstall Windows?

Driver for the chipset and anything else like onboard sound are found on the cd that comes with the board or downloaded from the support site. Those can downloaded and installed while Net framework 2.0 folowing 1.1 should go on before trying to install the software and drivers for the video card.
Once you have get online Windows will need to be activated and then verified as well as seeing the Installer 3.1 downloaded and installed first. Browser is on it.
Have the NIC driver handy. Install windows, then the NIC driver. Go online and do the windows updates. First thing is SP 2. Then you can download all the Windows updates. Do the custom install and it will download any drivers, such as sound and video, at the same time provided they have them. If not you can always download them from the manufacturer's site when you're done.
That's it.. All there is to it.

If you don't have the drivers get them off the net search your motherboard and add drivers into the search and you should be able to find them - that is what i have done before.

Good point - because when the motherboards becomes out of date they will be very hard to hold off!
Once you see the Windows Installer 3.1 downloaded and installed as a requirement the MS update will locate the latest version of drivers available. By simply dropping the Start menu you will see the Update Windows option right above the Program link to bring out the list of programs installed.
If you manually visit the MS update site itself once the scan is complete you can select the express or custom option where you can look over optional software and hardware updates with the links seen on the left hand column along with those provided by MS. The optional updates are for things like WMP, tv tuner cards, and other 3rd party softwares and devices.

I've looked into a repair install, but have run into many problems creating a boot disc. Windows Installer won't work properly, and .Net Framework won't install. Most software I purchase won't install either. I'm just going to do a clean install and start from scratch.
When booting off of the recovery disk you simply follow Dell's information for seeing the system restored to factory condition. The instructions would be seen in the user manual as well as at the support site.

After rereading your post, I'm a little unclear as to the order I need to do these things in. Can you clarify if this is the correct order?
1. Reinstall Windows
2. Download/install NET Framework (version 2.0 I assume)
3. Download/install Windows Installer 3.1
4. Goto MS and search for updates and download/install the recommended updates (including SP2)
5. Install my drivers and software.
Is this the correct order, and are these the correct versions I need to install?

This is something I'm not familiar with. What is "NIC"?
Will the appropriate versions of .NET Framework and Windows Installer be part of these automatic Windows updates?
I mean PC eye has repeatedly proven that he's an old fool that doesn't know what he's talking about, misdirecting people, making things way more complicated than they need to be, causing them unnecessary time, aggravation and money.

Sorry, I'm new to this. Does installing the Network Interface Card consist of connecting the cable modem to the back of my computer and installing the CD that my internet provider (Comcast) gave me?
