Clean Install of Windows XP

After rereading your post, I'm a little unclear as to the order I need to do these things in. Can you clarify if this is the correct order?

1. Reinstall Windows
2. Download/install NET Framework (version 2.0 I assume)
3. Download/install Windows Installer 3.1
4. Goto MS and search for updates and download/install the recommended updates (including SP2)
5. Install my drivers and software.

Is this the correct order, and are these the correct versions I need to install?

You mixed up the order there for sure. Following a clean install of Windows you would want Net framework 1.1 to go on first mainly that is required by many older programs run on XP. The newer 2.0 version won't simply replace the request for 1.1. The newer 2.0 and 3.0 will be seen along with the total amount of updates. The latest 3.5 is optional.

When first going for the updates the Installer 3.1 is the first thing you run into when not using the automatic updates. You have to see that go on and restart the system and then return to the update site for manually selecting which ones you will want to see go on.

Often the automatic method will see a driver set go on you won't want. But then one motor mouth wouldn't let you know about why it is often better to have the automatic update feature off if one or more problems are being seen with a newer set of drivers. Those are problems that come up at times with video, sound, and other expansion cards.

So then, would this be the correct order:

1. Reinstall Windows
2. Download/install NET Framework 1.1?
3. Download/install Windows Installer 3.1
4. Goto MS and manually download/install the selected updates (including SP2)? I'm not sure what updates I would need to select here.
5. Install my drivers and software.
6. Install NET Framework 2.0 and/or 3.0 after installing my drivers (or while installing my drivers if the drivers require 2.0 or 3.0)???

No, the correct order is what I gave you. Again, don't listen to him unless you want to unnecessarily complicate your life. It's your choice, the easy way or the hard way. The easy way is to start with Windows Update and let it do everything, including the .NET packages.

Yeah i was going to say if anything needs the .NET Packages it will get you to install them.

Google eye get's pwned repeatedly. The guy continuously gets proven wrong. Why anyone with half a brain would listen to anything he says is beyond me. When all he can come back with is some hairbrained comment about "family photos" when you crack a joke, and even though he never shuts the hell up and keeps coming back into the thread repeatedly to cover his arse, he consistently gets it handed to him...even his excuses get hammered.

So.. It's up to you. Join the rising number of CFers that realize he's just a know-nothing old fool... Or waste time, energy, braincells and money trying to make sense of the nonsensical drivel that is the bulk of his postings.

Totally Agree.... :) it drives me nuts!:rolleyes:

The 2.0 and 3.0 releases are part of the updates already. If you need the 1.1 for something that has to be installed first being the older version. Once a newer one is on it will fail to be installed with the newer version already installed error popping up on you. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...4f-088e-40b2-bbdb-a83353618b38&DisplayLang=en

The latest Installer 3.1 will be the first thing seen when you first go for updates once connected online. You can try saving it like the 1.1 to a folder and installing just before clicking the Windows update option on the Start menu. That will likely be a waste of time since the automatics updates will first see that put on for verification. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&DisplayLang=en

I think you're going to see him getting a little more aggressive and desperate as time goes on. Currently he's getting seriously pwned in the hard drive forum as well, amongst other places.

As he's been used to not being challenged for a year, now suddenly he's being held accountable, he's not going to like it. Of course he's going to lash out. He enjoyed a foothold, a reign of error, that's now being brought to an end. He's not going to go without a fight.

Funny, I'm reminded of Iraq and Saddam Hussein. Hah. What a picture.

why is this forum so aggressive and unfriendly?

It's not, don't let the gang-up on PC throw you off. He makes it a point to confuse the hell out of people who ask legit questions for legit problems, then backtracks and posts screenshots that have nothing to do with the original problem, trying desperately to get people to listen to him when it's apparent to everyone that he's being owned left and right. I actually had a bit of respect for his Posts until he claimed uninstalling your USB drivers would crash Windows:cool: (Now THAT was a good Thread!)

For the most part, there are plenty of folks here to *actually* *help* those with questions/problems, and overall, it's a very friendly area.

Every Forum has their trolls and flamers, we're no different. Odd thing is, a few have been banned the past few weeks for posting the same useless crap that others insist on still doing on a daily basis. You think others would learn, but eh...

I agree - he posts the difficult way.

Sorry PC Eye, but I've now had three people warn me about your posts, so I'll have to be on the safe side and listen to their advice.
