Clean install partition?

I will be installing windows 7 HP 64 on a completely new computer with a single bare drive 640gb. I am confused by the partitioning aspect of this. Am I supposed to allocate a specific amount of the hdd to windows or just chooses the whole 640gbs? My old HP computer has a single drive with a separate section for recovery on it. Do I need to do the same thing? This is my first build I need all the info I can get. Thanks for any help with this. I tried search but cannot find any concrete information.
 
Just choose the whole partition as recovery partitions are made at the factory, not by computer geeks like us :)
 
I find it easier to make 2 partitions, 1 for Operating system and programs and the other one for data. So that when you have to reinstall windows you don't need to back up your data, its already on a different partition.

Let's just say I have a 640gb hdd. Should I put Windows on it's own partition, and everything else on the rest of the hard drive? Would it be safer to put the programs with the data and Windows by itself, so if I have to reinstall I just have to deal with Windows? How much of the hdd should I put for windows 7 HP 64bit? Sorry for all the questions.
 
It all depends on how much software you put on your comptuer. A normal user could probably get away with like 50-75 gb on the first partition and the rest of the drive for data.
