Cleaning Time

Alright, so uhh the dust on my computer is getting very noticable now lol. I would like some tips. First off, what should I be using, a rag or some dustoff stuff? And if I should be using both, on what parts? And if anything I dont know about please tell me.

I will use just a can of air to blow it off, holding up a vaccuum up to suck in the dust. And you could prob. use a rag to get off the dust thats stuck on there more.

D

Yeah.. I have also used the suck tool from a vacuum to get the dust out of my computer... its really effective if you have a good suction tool on the vacuum.

Heya

Although it may be effective, I would worry about static when sucking the dust out with a vacuum cleaner. A can of compressed air is in my view a better choice. You could install air filters to help you limit the amount of dust that gets into your case significantly (and decrease air-flow ;))

i think hes talking about using the compressed air to get the dust out of the comp, and the vacuum to suck up the dust thats coming out.

Removeing that "grime" off the fan blades is necessary to get maximum fan performance. Q-Tips dabbed in alcohol is the only way I found to do it properly and can be time consuming. Recently I cleaned my front intake fan and lowered my cpu temp by 7C..Well worth the effort

How about running the fanblades under the tap? Considerably less effort id say

Running the blades under the tap is a good idea if its light dust but if you get it into the barings etc…make sure its completely dry, how do you keep dust out? how often do you guys clean it out? Where I live it should be done twice a week because it’s humid in tropical Queensland Australia (where I live) and the dust absorbs that moisture and then it will corrode things....kill the computer!!!!

Heehee or go into a simblings room, open the computer and position it in such a way to allow prevent gravity from settling the dust back in the machine and go nuts with comrpessed air :P

just as long as you follow up with Isopropal (SP?) for the residue

I guess but if you use hot water there isnt going to be much reisude (ok if you've got bubblegum or something on the blades then you've got other problems). Any residue that might be left generally wont impede much

how do you keep dust out?
Dont use air-based cooling and then u can seal the box

I though of that…..is it much trouble to water cool, expensive, noisy, “space wise” can you just water cool the cpu of the latest chips? And seal the box. would a 7800gtx get to hot in the sealed box with ram, chipset hdd etc..

A water cooling system require alot more maintance than air cooling. You should change the water once a month or so, it is pretty expensive (several hundred dollars for a good one), there arent any fans so theres very little noise, and it takes up a fair amount of space. If you were going to water cool your system, i would water cool the CPU, Chipset, and Video card.

I've never tried it myself, but go on eBay and look for "computer vacuum". They're supposed to be little vacuum cleaners that suck up the dust in your computer without damaging anything. Sometimes comes with little brushes and solutions to help with the process.

Ok well without knowing what parts need cleaning its a little hard, but ill give it a shot.

Keyboard: I prefer to just take the whole thing apart and clean it with a soft rag and some rubbing alchohol as well as one of those air dusters. Now when i say take it apart i mean it. I pop all the keys, the rubber contact layers thats above the board EVERYTHING gets cleaned.

Mouse: well when i used to have a track ball i would pull the ball out and scrape all the black crap off of the three rollers, but since i am now wireless and optical, and you thought i was gonna say ball-less , i don't bother cleaning my mouse beyond a alchohol rubdown ont he battery contacts every month or so.

Monitor: treat it like a window and wipe it down

PC: Air duster all the way. There may be other ways to safely clean the inside of your pc but i have always found that air dusters are fast and effective means to get the dust out of allt he hard to see places.

Game controlers: i do occasionally take apart my other devices such as my ps2 like controller, joystick and whatnot. I do NOT reccomend this unless you either are very comfortable with taking apart electronics and being able to put them back together again in WORKING order.

As always there is the risk of breaking something when you take it apart, so if you at all feel uncomfortable taking things apart dont. Just use the air-duster and do as good a job as you can, or find someone that can to the take apart because you will get a much more efficient cleaning that way.

vacuum

DO NOT VACUMM A COMPUTER. I will be the first to tell you that you are stupid if you use a vacumm on a computer. It causes static electricity that could ruin parts in your computer. Motherboards are the easiest to destroy with static from a vacuum. My friend vacuumed his computer and fried his MOBO. Use duster... or something along those lines.

instead of the compressed air tanks alone i'll just hook up my air to my paintball gun and shoot blank in there at 15bps lol, that shoot get dust flying *cough*

You are correct, but would it hurt to say it in a slightly nicer manner? I think it impolitic to call someone stupid because they were not aware of the hazards of ESD.

I use compressed air, myself, and manually wipe down the fan blades.

With a little modification, you can put a filer on your intake that will reduce the amount of dust that gets into your case, but you have to remember to periodically check and clean said filter.

Well, I still use a leaf blower first. Take all wobbly items ouf of the machine, expansion cards if you like, lights, etc. Make sure everything you leave can withstand some high air pressure. Then have someone hold the case (with both side panels off) and hold the leafblower a good 1-2ft. away. Blast it for a minute or 2, go in closer if you can't get a wad of dust out, but don't get too close.

After that, you cna finish up with any other method listed here that sounds reasonable. For fans I just use a damp rag, for the metal surfaces of the case I also use a damp rag. Isopropyl alcohol is good for a shiny clean, or dissolving sticky stuff.

Ok im hearing about these filters and suck for computers but i cant find any... I need to get some I live on a dirt road and dust finds ways into everything.

As for cleaning i blow it out with a can of caned air or my compressor.

I just use universal filter media for AC/furnaces. Once I get some time to mess around, I want to build an intake box and slap a HEPA filter on it...
