Cleaning up laptop, making faster etc.

Sister just gave me her laptop, its fairly old about 4years maybe.
At the moment it runs fairly slow and was wondering if i could do anything to speed it up and make it look and feel better.
Its a packard Bell, windows xp.
Also the charger doesnt actually charge up the laptop, if you unplug the charger the laptop just turns off, it has to have the charger in to work.

The easiest thing to do is completely reinstall the operating system. That would probably give you the best results. If you dont have the OS disc, you can run some virus and anti virus scans, registry cleaners (CCleaner), uninstall all programs you don't need etc.

As for the laptop turning off w/o an AC adapter, it's most likely that the battery is completely dead.
