Cleaning up old programs

Is there anyway to make sure that you have removed all instances of a program form your computer? Ive been running Ccleaner but it is still showing that msnmessenger is installed on my computer even though it has been gone for a long time! Im getting ready to sell this laptop and just wnat to make sure everything is sort of 'cleaned up'.

Also, is there a log somewhere that would keep a record of programs that have been on the computer or personal information and such that I need to cleanup as well?
 
if you are going to sell the laptop.

When you know someone wants to buy it... reinstall windows.
 
Im selling it to a friend with some programs already installed on it I didnt want to have to reinstall, thats why im not reformating
