What can i use to clean old thermal compound off of a cpu?

For starters i would use an old cloth and some Q-Tips, thats always worked well for me.

Isopropyl (sp?) Alcohol. You can buy it on ebay, thats where I got mine.

You also need a lint free cloth (The sorta thing you use to clean glasses (specs))

Get 99 % alcohol at pharmacy and your Q-tips at the same time. Don't get 70 % alcohol, it can leave moisture on components.

Why did you buy alcohol off ebay? Is it ileagle in scotland or something?

No, its just I couldnt find it in any shops localy, and the nearest place I might get it is 70 Miles away!

nail vanish, heck you can even scrub it of with washing up liquid and a tooth brush. Just be sure to let it dry out first

yea, i use coffee filters and high % isopropyl (less water = win)
coffee filters and Q tips work just fine... or cotton balls even. just make sure you dont TOUCH WITH YOUR FINGERS! put your hand in a plastic bag to spread it around!
Silver 5 thermal compound = win.
