Cleanup task bar?

My task bar has been getting pretty cluttered lately and I was curious if there's a way to hide the icons but still let the applications run? Some of them are there all the time and I don't ever need to change them (volume icon, battery backup icon, etc.)

So how do I keep them running but get rid of the icons so I don't have to look at them?

Right click taskbar and click Properties, Click the Notification Area tab, Place a check in Hide Inactive Icons.

That doesn't get them off of my taskbar, it just puts them behind that anoying arrow thing.

hmmm....do you have XP or Vista?

Right click taskbar, properties, customize and in the "Current Items" list you have three options. Click on what you don't want and select.
Always show
Always hide
Hide when inactive

Choose Always hide
