clicking

im trying to format a 40 gig hard drive and it keeps making a clicking sound and stops formating i'm sure its bad i just wanted someone elses opinion

no seriously, its gone to hard drive heaven.
but if it wont reformat then you're out of luck.
i'd say replace it if you need to... or just dont bother if you dont need to.

Or as a last resort you can get a low level format utility for your HDD from here:http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/low-level-format.html choose your drives manufacturor. Self monitoring analysis and reporting technology (SMART) is whats used to determine whats wrong with your drive. Chances are the drive is gone, but it cant hurt to double check.
