I recently bought an old computer off myt dad and it hhas windows 98. ive taken it apart and had a look at it and from what i can see on the motherboard it is A7S8X-MX. i dont know if this is good or not. It has 512mb of ddr ram. 80gb ide hard drive and a 400w power supply. i dont know whhat graphics it has or anything but when i open it up it has long wide strips of wires everywhere. i was just wondering if someone could tell me more about this as i have no idea. i live quite a while away from town 4hrs so i cant ask a computer specialist.
what do things like ddr and ide mean for the ram and the hdd. and would i need a new motherboard and what graphics card/cards would be compatible.

thanks alot

Come on dude, not to be rude, maybe just because im tired, but you could've google this up.

no problem, what model is the computer? after all this is why we're here, because we like doing this stuff.

Well its a old socket A motherboard. The long wide strip of wires your talking about is probably IDE cables. Kinda old to be upgraded. What are you wanting to do with it? It will take up to 2gbs. of DDR333 memory and has a X8 AGP slot.

mainly for gaming purposes...lol...nothing will probably run... was hoping to upgrade it to play unreal tournament but not really knowing how to upgrade the computer... any ideas for what i can buy to have it maxed out and i dont really have a price limit as i have a job... what graohics cards etc.

thanks alot

Which Unreal Tournament? The gaps between the games will mean required performance levels are quite difference. If it's UT3 then it'll never run as it taxes even the latest systems.

If you're looking to play the latest games, or UT3 its probably best to just get a new system built. Your current motherboard won't be able to support many of things you'll need such as DDR2 memory, a PCI-E card, processor, etc.
