College Student Laptop Advice

Hey guys this is my first post and I hope someone can help me out with some ideas for a laptop. I am graduating from college this spring and entering law school in the fall. The law school I am attending requires me to get a laptop and my parents told me they would buy me one for a graduation gift up to $2000.

What I want to know is, what laptop should I get that gives me the best bang for my buck. I HATE slow computers, but I doubt I am going to be running many extremely strenuous programs. Style isnt as important, but a sleek looking laptop would be nice!

Things that I really want:
good processor
large screen (~17")
Decent RAM
Decent graphics card

I currently have a Dell vostro desktop with 2.5GB of ram and a Core 2 Duo E4500 processor @ 2.2 GHz. I have been very pleased with my desktop.

Thanks to anyone that can give me some advice.

The screen size being 17 is a necessity, but I just dont want one thats like 13. I really would like to get as close to 2,000 as possible also.

Also, which is more important performance-wise, cache or Ghz?

This one have good spec, and relatively low price, but it is only 16". If you want a really big screen, just use $1000 to buy a monitor or LCD TV

Ther are other higher end laptop, but I don't see the point of spend extra on that.

One thing to consider is the size of the laptop. there is nothing portable or light weight about a 17". ive got one. its more like carrying a suitcase. like it though. Maybe not for school.

My asus is one of the biggest 17" out there. Its no prob as long as you have a backpack. I walk around campus with it constantly. I mean, it's still lighter than one book...

Wait until next weekend--there might be new Macbook Pros out. They are definitely worth it...evidenced by the large percentage of them on college campuses.

i have a dell studio 1537, and i really like it. i really like the hinge/lid design, and the slot-loading disc drive is pretty sweet too.

picked mine up refurbished for $700 from dell last year. its pretty much fully loaded, even has an ati video card in it. retail was about double what i paid, but the refurbs come with 1-year warranty, so i went with it for half the price (new ones are 2 year).
