Technically I dont think there would be a difference between those two extensions as they are both as easy to register. But then who knows the exact formula of search algorithms, it is as closely guarded as the colonel's secret 11 herbs and spices or the formula to coca-cola. I think .edu sites would get a definite advantage search wise.
I would say no because normally SEO is more dependent on keywords/link popularity, rather than the domain name (.com, .info, etc.). One thing to think about though is how many sites do you normally go to with a .info? The .info domain name is rather new so their are nowhere near as many .info sites as their are .com sites.
Not as many people are aware of them, but if the domain is not available in .com or some other major TLD, .info is a good choice. I used to have a website; with .info and I still got a load of hits, not saying its the best, I doubt the people searching Google (or another engine) care whether its .com or .info or .org, etc.
People who use search engines dont really care as long as they see some title that has something that they are looking for in it, then they click it.
Yes you are right.
I was reffering to people in general who dont use a search engine, most would assume its in .com
