Hi all
My name is James and im a 29 year old Automotive mechanic. I dont really know much about computers but i know enough to get by. I'm sure people will tell me to google this but i wasnt sure what im looking for. Heres my situation.
I have 2 hard drives on my PC. the main one is a 60 gigger and the other is 40 gigs. my 60 gig HDD is my C: and the 40 gig is my F: drive. is there any way i can combine these harddrives so the computer sees them as one?

thank you in advanced
:D

yes... what you're thinking of is called raid and prolly the most common implementation of what you're talking about is raid0... see the RAID 101 for quick fresher :).

alright so RAID 0 seems to be best fit for me. is there any software/hardware i have to buy for a RAID 0 setup?
will my drives have to be wiped clean?

sorry for the dumb questions, im not computer savvy like you guys :o

You need a RAID controller, your motherboard might have one, if not you can buy controller cards, then the only software you need is an operating system.

so i heard if im going to do raid0 i need 2 hard drives of the same capacity then?
not really the raid array will be setup in your case as such:
you have 60gig + 40 gig
so the 60gig will be partitioned into 1x 40 gig and a spare 1 x 20 gig
the newly made 40 gig will be raided with your current 40 gig drive
resulting in 1 x 80gig raid array, and 1 x 20gig partiton

resulting in 1 x 80gig raid array, and 1 x 20gig partiton
Are you sure? This might work with a software RAID but hardware combines the drives before they are partitioned

I thought he was refering to my software raid suggestion above his post.
In hardware raid the whole hdd is used you are correct
