command promt error

when i go to Run and type in cmd i get this message.
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.com
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT> The system file is not suitable for
running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to
terminate the application" then it gives the options "Close" and "Ignore" either way i can't use the command promt. any suggestions?
 
your AUTOEXEC.NT file is actually missing... i've seen this several times, do a search for the file (its normally backed up elsewhere such as in the folder named repair) and copy it to the system32 folder. i dont know why it goes missing but ive seen it on other computers and this always sorts out the problem

sometimes this is caused by upgrading to Windows XP SP2
(Service Pack 2). in some Systems important System files such as: AUTOEXEC.NT or CONFIG.NT get deleted,
causing various Applications to fail and yielding the above errors.
also happen after a virus attack
that is messing up people's System files and it is just running rampant.
In order to protect your System, make sure that you have the
latest virus Definitions installed for your anti-virus software program
You may also try this:
Sometimes Windows may back up the file AUTOEXEC.NT in the Windows/repair
folder from its original folder of Windows/System32.
See if you have it there and if so, you may just copy it back to the
System32 folder and all should be good.
 
yes just copy c:\windows\repair\autoexect.nt to c:\windows\system32\autoexect.nt

if it's not in the repair folder you can get it on the XP cd

I did that and now i get this,
"C:\Windows\system32\cmd.com
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0549 IP:010c OP:c4 f6 06 a9 02 choose 'Close' to terminate the application"
Then i get the option to close or ignore, but this time if i ignore the command stays up but nothings in it. please help.

same problem

I have the same problem as this poor guy, my cmd.exe only opens, gives a black blank screen and then closes, i've used command ever since but some commands like ping don't work here, there i get the same error
