Comp Keeps Resetting

when im playing a game over the internet sometimes my computer just resets itself. It only happens whilst im playing the game.
Could this be a problem with the temperature of my system? If so, do I need to buy some case fans, how many? and has anybody got any good examples of ones i could get?

this could be your computer trying to operate safely and it sounds like the tempreture is hitting windows maximum safe temp, it doesn't mean its way too hot but windows doesn't like to operate under those conditions. It could be your CPU tempreture. What fans do you have in your computer? If it keeps doing it, buy a better Heatsink and fan for your CPU and use a tempreture monitoring software if your motherboard supports it.

about a year ago i used to have a 128mb 5200 and the fan wasn't doing its job properly so the computer would shut down because of that. Check the fan on your graphics card aswell.

Well I now how you can "stop" it from resetting suddenly, the "solution" is from an article in PC GAMER (UK) ISSUE 138. Right-click on My Computer, choosing Properties->Advanced->Startup and Recovery->Settings. Uncheck "Automatically Restart". Then, the next time this happens it shows you BSOD and hopefully some info on what caused the problem. You can search for a solution then from http://support.microsoft.com

if you are going to disable a max temp shutdown becareful not to leave your computer alone if it has a tendancy to overheat.. fried mobos arent too fun

can you recommend a decent heatsink/fan for my CPU?
ive unchecked that box to see if i can find out the problem.
thanks for your help.

I got the message IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
is that an overheating problem?
it sounds to me an error that occurs when you have incompatible hardware or drivers. help!

I almost have the same setup as you on my desktop and I've been running into heating issues myself. I used a program called mobile meter on my laptops so I installed it on the desktop as well. My cpu temp was hovering around 61 to 63*C at idle and 70 to 74*C under a heavy load. Anyways I got another case and some new fans, now I'm running at 53*C at idle and 63*C under a load. I also used Arctic Silver 5 as well when I switched cases. That's still a little too high for me so I ordered this heat sink http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835106035 so hopefully this will solve my heating problems.

Ive installed a program called Speedfan 4.24 which is available for download at www.download.com
This program tells me:
Temp1 is 56c
Temp2 is 66c
HD0 is 50C
HD1 is 44c
this is when my CPU usage is at 100%, i take it my system temperature is 66c?
that heatsink has got some good reviews partyguy816, you think i should go for one of those?

Honestly I can't tell you yes or no because I haven't recieved mine yet. I think it should be here tomorrow or Friday. I would recommend Arctic Silver 5 if you are not using it already. The only thing that I have read that was a negitive to that heatsink is that it's big and barely fits, and can be loud when turned up all the way. I think I'm just going to pull my MB out and put it on instead of trying to put my ape hands in there. I've used speed fan before, but I didn't know what the temp 1 and temp 2 were. Mobile meter just has 1 temp for cpu and temps for your hard drives. This is just extras, but you might try running round cables in your tower to increase air flow. I'm not sure how much it actually helped because I switched cases at the same time. You can find the cables on www.newegg.com for about $3.00 or so. The cheapest soultion could be to just take the side panel off the case and see it that helps. My temps range from 44*C to 57*C, it just depends on what the temps are here in my house.

ok partyguy, thanks a lot for your help. ill hold on a minute and try out running round cables, and ill get arctic silver 5. my temps are hitting 60-70c so its not looking good.
thanks again!

oh so my CPU is hitting 70c at times... shit.
ive orderd some arctic silver 5. would it be better to fit a new heatsink after ive applied the arctic silver 5 or vice-versa?

You can do either. I replaced mine so I could get more air flow. With Arctic Silver 5, I dropped my cpu temp almost 10*C. Just go to their website and look at the instructions. Also make sure you clean off most if not all your factory thermal paste.

Hey Rip, I got my new heatsink today and installed it. It dropped my temps another 8*C, so now I'm at 44*C in my hot house. If you decide to get the Arctic Silver 5 first to see what your temps are then go ahead. That heatsink will probably drop at least 5 to 10*C on your unit. I did have to pull my motherboard out to mount it because there isn't enough room to snap the clamp on. So if you think you might run into that problem, you might want to go with something else if you don't want to pull it out. Hope everything goes well.

OH BTW make sure you put the heatsink on right. I wasn't watching what I was doing and I got it backwards. My CPU temps were showing 88 to 94*C. Once I saw that, I quickly shut it down and checked it out. LOL

isnt 100c boiling temperature? hehe..
yeah, ill stick some arctic silver on and see what the temps look like after that. Taking my motherboard out seems some trouble but if my temperature doesnt go down enough im going to get that heatsink and have a go anyway. the volume of it doesnt realy bother me much but is it loud?

I don't think it's too loud. I have some Aerocool fans that I use up in front of the case to suck in air that blow 53cfm's and they are loud. I guess cause it's inside I don't hear this as much. Depending on how the heatsink fits on your cpu, you might be able to take the fan off the heatsink and reverse the clips, then put it all back on. I didn't think about doing that until after the fact.

ok mate, thanks. i think im gonna go for it and get that same heatsink. From looking at where my CPU is there is plenty of room anyway.
