OK guys I need some help. I have the following comp.

I can run any game or application except for l4d. The computer runs WOW as long as the kids want or games like sims. I can play l4d for 5-30 mins then boom kicks me out randomly. It makes a looping sound then gone. I tried exiting AVG and still doesn't work. I tried steams website and says something about memory kernells but I'm lost. Can someone please help. Oh yeah a couple times now the comp. completely shuts down into a blue screen with a fatal error and boots into safe mode. Maybe because overclocking the cpu. I took it to a local shop and they say everything is running perfect, if this is the case I wouldn't have an issue right??? URGH any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Have you stability tested your computer with prime95 for 24 hours to verify your overclock is stable? What kinda temperatures are you getting under load for cpu/gpu? Also, have you tried running memtest86?(Bear in mind it needs to run for at least 8 hours to check stability).

I have no idea what any of this is. How do I check temperatures, in bios? What is prime 95 and memtest 86 do I just d/l and run? I'm not very good with comp. stuff but I'm eager to learn.

Thank You

Ok, lets start out by listing:

Prime95, a program used to stability test by running the cpu at full load, if your overclock isnt stable(eg- not enough voltage for the speed) then it will fail or your computer will freeze. Usually an indication of stable would be running small FFT's for 24hours.

Memtest86- A bootable cd used to check for memory errors, you can burn this to a cd, and should be run for at least 8 hours to verify memory indeed has no errors.

To check temperatures, i would recommend realtemp for the cpu, and EVGA precision to check graphics temperature. This is the quickest thing you can check, just open up both programs, and play L4D for 10minutes or so, immedientaly after you close it mouse over the graph on precision to see what temperature the highest peak was, and also for realtemp see what the highest temperature that peaked at.

Thank you I will get started tonight and finish tomorrow. I'll let you know what happened. I tried d/l and running realtemp on this comp. my old comp. and it said it doesn't support this system old p4 h/t with 3.00 ghz 1g ram. My bios temps were 53c/127f.

That didn't take long, I ran prime95 for less than .5 seconds and came up with hardware failure and stopped. I'm gonna check realtemp now.:(

OK here is was realtemp showed

E8500 4009.09 422.01X9.5

Original numbers

47 41
Distance to TJMax
53 60
Min
47 40
Max
58 53

Ran a sensor test and this is what came up

CPU load Ave. Distance to TJ Max
50.2 42 41
44.4 42.7 42.1
39.0 43.5 45
33.4 44.4 47.4
28.8 45.8 49
24.6 46.5 50.8
20.4 48 52.6
15.9 48.9 54.2
1.2 49.8 56.2
Idle 52 58

After

47 40
Distance to TJ Max
53 60
Min
46 39
Max
58 59

Don't know what any of this means but I see people here saying there temps are between 38 and 43 c am i right. So my cpu is running a little hot? I have an antec 900 case with 5 fans.

Well, the prime95 failing is your problem then. Your gonna need to up the voltage, you can just crank the clocks and not raise voltages. This guide should help you get your overclock stable:

I just want stock speeds how do I set everything back to factory defaults??? In the bios. F12 or do I hit del key on boot up? The guy at the COMPUTER store said everything tested out, come to find out he doesn't know cr@p. Maybe I'll call a local So. Cal. guy and have in come over and set ervything up. Guys in the paper charge 20-30 hr. for set ups, builds, virus removal, training etc. Maybe I'll keep my sanity and do this and maybe go back to window XP I'm not liking VISTA.

Windows vista isnt what is causing your problem, the overclock is. Just go into your bios and look for clock speed, set it to the default speed of your processor and it should work alright.

If you just want clock speeds, just reset your BIOS. Shut your computer down, unplug the power cable, press the power button again (this discharges the capacitors on your mobo), and then clear the BIOS. You can either jumper the "Clear BIOS" pins on your mobo with a flathead screwdriver (check your mobo manual for where the pins are) or you can just pop the CMOS battery out for about 30 seconds, put it back in, and boot.

Thank you guys. Everything works great now, I just popped out the mobo battery. One last question is on Dram Timings this is what my mobo says

1 5-5-5-15-3-52-6-3
2 8-3-5-4-6-4-6
3 14-5-1-6-6

It says I can change these manually. Do I need to touch these settings?

Thanks again
