Comp wont recognize DVD when booting games, indicative of faulty drive?

Hello. :) I am having an issue when trying to start games that I am wondering if someone could help me with. What it's doing is when you try and start up an installed piece of software it says "Please install the correct DVD in the DVD-ROM drive and select OK", but the correct DVD is in the drive already. Could the drive be faulty? I only have one so I can't use another one to see if that's the problem. The funny thing is it works to install software. It will also recognize some disks, like Bioshock, but most other games it wont run because it wont recognize the disk. Help! Thanks! :)

what is the drive??? sata or ide???

make sure cables are connected properly and power is good.

It's SATA. The cable is plugged in, just checked it. It works to install software, it just wont run after it's installed, lol. I'm hoping it's just a drive problem.

Yeah i think there is something that can test if it is faulty.....

Is there a program online that can test it? I'll probably end up replacing it as soon as I can get to the parts store but I'm clueless as to why this is happening in the mean time. This is why you need more than one drive. What else could it be? There's no way it could be a bug in the operating system do you? Virus scan turned out clean.
