e8400 processor
790i motherboard
ddr3 ram???

i was checking the specs and the 790i motherboard supports ddr3 ram and the processor supports ddr2 ram, are the 3 compatible, can i use that motherboard with the ddr3 ram and will the processor recognize it

ddr3 is for 3 sticks of ram. ddr2 is for 2. So only 2 will have slots for the dd2 so if you put 3 in then 2 will be in the ddr2 slots and youll just have a extra stick of ram in another... Im really tired right now so i hope that made since or should i have just not posted lol

Not entirely true. DDR3 comes in Dual- and Tri-channel setups.
OP: I'm not sure I follow your question. But I'm going to answer it how I think you are asking it.
You can use DDR3 and any cpu that uses a 775 socket afaik.

The 790i uses DDR3 RAM. The memory controller is on the board,
not in the CPU for LGA 775.

ddr3 is for 3 sticks of ram. ddr2 is for 2.
DDR2 is Dual Data rate memory and DDR3 is Triple Data rate memory.
Different motherboards require different types of memory.

More specific, the OP can use DDR3 memory and any CPU that's compatible
with that motherboard. :good:
