compact htpc

Hello,

I'm looking for suggestions on building a compact htpc. All I need it to do is stream HD from my fileserver to my television. I don't think this should be terribly expensive and I have the experience needed to put a pc together.

What I don't know is what's out there? It's been a couple years since I've made my gaming rig and I'm sure htpc has come along way.

I would be running xbmc ontop of WinXP.

It shouldn't cost more than a few hundred dollars. I suppose the hardest part is finding a small enough case that supports a powerful enough motherboard.

I really want this thing to be something small, not much bigger than the common router to put in my mother's bedroom so she can watch movies on the TV in her bedroom.

I figured it'd be a neat little christmas gift.
 
htpc has really come a long way since I built my last one! That seems to be exactly what I was looking for, thanks! =)
 
You said "dollars", so you're probably from North America or Australia, right...that site is from the UK. :/
 
yeah, but now I'm on the right track of looking for a good value "network media player". Haven't found anything great yet but still looking...
 
I usually read all the reviews I can find and check if I can find any threads about issues with a product.

The guys at HD Nation reviewed the predecessor, the WD TV Live. The WD TV Live Plus has a hard drive, I don't know if there are other differences so check if there are any other additions/improvements.

You'd be better off just buying a network video player. HTPCs generally are more expensive and is used for more than just playing videos.
