Compaq Presario 1200 won't power up

Hi,
I've recently aquired a Compaq Presario 1200 from my aunt. She said that one day it simply wouldn't turn on. After she gave it to me, I checked to see if it was a problem with the adapter or plug on the laptop, but both the light on the adapter, and the light on the computer that says it is plugged in are lit. It just wont power up. At all. The battery won't charge either. So, has anybody encountered a similar problem? What would you reccomend I do? Any information and help would be much apreciated. Thanks!

How do you know the battery won't charge if it won't boot? Is there a charge light on it or something?

It could be a few hundred things... It's rare, but drives can keep a machine from doing anything. Bad RAM, bad processor, bad motherboard, bad power(both the "box" and the internals)

If I just had to guess, I'd say it's got a bad motherboard and probably isn't worth repairing, but that's just a guess...

got the exact notebook with the same problem, I think it was because it was dropped though. Something funny about how the screen has to be in the right angle to get it to turn on. It's ready for the trash can though... maybe you could use the parts off it.. i'll sell it to ya.. or (trade)? for?
 
It's really an odd problem. The way she described it to me was that it still worked off of battery power for the last few hours of its life which makes me think its not simply a bad motherboard. I'm currently in the process of dissassembling it to look for any bad solder joints in the power circuits. I doubt I'll find anything though. I might just sell it for parts or something, I don't think it would really be worth trying to fix at this point if the problem isn't easily fixed.
 
It really seems like a motherboard issue, I'd look into that. If it's under warranty, it's most likely covered.
 
It's definately not under warranty anymore. I didn't find anything that looked like a bad solder, so I guess I really don't know what to do. She said if I can't get it to work, she at least wanted the hard drive out of it since she still has things on it, so I think I might do that. Otherwise, I'm not sure what to do.
 
Ok, I've decided that I want to attempt data recovery. I've been reading around on the forums and it sounds like you can simply hook it up to an existing IDE cable in a desktop. Is this true? Does it work? Thanks a bunch!

Yup, that works just fine. However, the laptop drive is a 2.5" drive. You'll need some sort of converter... Either 2.5 to IDE or 2.5" enclosure(to USB)
