This one has got me stumped. I have a Compaq Presario 2200 with a black display. I can see the image in the background but the screen is basically black. So far I have:
1) Replaced the LCD invertor
2) Replaced the entire LCD screen
3) Connected an external monitor which works fine
4) Tried turning off ALL hibernating options

and still no luck. I've been hearing about this happening alot lately on other models. Does anyone have any tips to try?

thanks

What do you mean by "replaced the entire LCD screen"? Because it sounds like the backlights are out. Perhaps the screen you replaced it with also has dead backlights or - ?

Where did you get the replacement screen, and have you tested it on another compatible laptop?

I ordered another lcd from ebay. Not sure if it is good or not. Is there a way to test these lcd screens other than just installing them and hoping that they're good? I've tried 2 lcd invertors ( 1 used and 1 new) and that didn't seem to work either.

LOL! Yes, I would certainly hope so. :D

However, you will need a properly working laptop that has the same sort of power outlet and ribbon to test the screen in (in your case, 2 pin, 30 pin) :(

If you don't have one lying around, maybe a local computer repair shop would be kind enough to let you try one of theirs for free (or maybe for a small fee)...

Of course, you could just RMA it to whoever sold you the screen? Then again, it sounds like perhaps your Power Source is to blame (the 2-pin connector) - as that's what powers up the backlights. In that case, you would need to replace the mobo.

Or, just replace the whole dang thing for $150 and be done with it. ;) http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-Presario-220...40666082?pt=Laptops_Nov05&hash=item563ffbfbe2

The symptom is that the backlight can't be lighted on. if you have replaced the LCD and inverter, it still keep the same problem. that means the motherboard or the ribbon cable is faulty. the external moniter can display, it doesn't mean the board is 100% good. because the control circuit for the inverter, which lights on the backlight is independant on the motherboard. this part is easy to be repaired for a motherboard repair technician.

Diagnosis procedures:
What you need to test is just the backlight, you just plug the backlight wire (2 wires) of another LCD into the inverter, if no light, try another inverter, if still no light, you may think about the ribbon cable which connects the motherboard to the inverter, or the motherboard.

OOOOooohhhhhhhh...... I was hoping you guys weren't going to say motherboard. That's kinda the way that I was leaning. When I swapped out the lcd I used another ribbon cable (connects to motherboard). When this did not work my next thought was motherboard. If that's the case then I should probably just replace the whole laptop. What do you guys think?

thanks for yout input

Yeah - I posted a link above to one on eBay for $150. Of course, you could spend twice that and get a new laptop altogether...
