Compaq presario cq62- black screen flashing cursor

This laptop was purchased 8 months ago. A few days ago it wouldn't turn on. It starts up with the bootup screen & you can hear the fan running.. & then it goes to a black screen with a blinking white cursor that looks like an underscore __ in the upper left corner.

When it starts to bootup I can press F11 (I believe) & it brings me to a few options "bios setup" "system recovery" ect. I ran numerous tests after pressing F2, the hard disk test, memory test, all passed.
So Idk.

Any advice?? If I purchase system recovery disks online through hp, will they still work? Even though I can't get past the black screen??

Make sure you don't have a camera memory card plugged into a reader or any flash drives plugged in to the usb ports.

I've encountered a good number of viruses recently that destory the MBR. Get yourself a copy of Windows 7 and boot to the recovery console (boot to the disk, select language, repair your computer, select Windows, user/pass, command prompt.

Now, type the following commands...
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /rebuildbcd

And for good measure
chkdsk c: /f (can't recall but I don't think you need the /f in recovery console...)

Reboot and typically this will fix everything. If you still have a problem, look into setting the correct partition active using diskpart under recovery console (I forget all the commands off the top of my head).

If that STILL doesn't work, you have a heck of an infection or some other problem...

If it DOES work, I suggest booting to Safe Mode with Networking, update your AV and run a full scan. You may consider running some other scans too such as TDSSKiller and Combofix.
