Compaq Presario v2000 Problem..

When i boot the laptop, the compaq screen appears, then i get a message like, media test failure, check cable. and that comes up about 3 or 4 times and then just shuts down.

i read somewhere that i needed to access the bios at startup by hitting f10 and change the boot options or something, but my computer keeps shutting down almost immediately after entering the bios, as if it's overheating or something. so i don't have enough time to change anything in the bios.

any help with this is much appreciated.

Reseat your Hard Drive (note: its in one of the covers under the laptop)
Also try removing the battery (and power cord) then hold the ON button in for 30secs. Then plug the power cord back in and turn on
 
That happened to me once. I ran Iolo system mechanic and it messed up some of my important files. A lot of times it's the Hard Drive. Try another Hard Drive if you have one lying around.

Also, if you can get into the BIOS, if it gives you an option to check which Hard Drives to boot from, see if yours shows up in the list. If it does put in the backup disc and try to boot from that.

If it doesn't, then I'm not sure I can help you any more :(
