Compaq system recovery, user accounts

bacically my comp screwed up and i was forced to do a system recovery, the one that restores back to the original settings but keeps all data intact.

so when i had done it and botted back up i logged into the Owner user account, it all seemed ok and normal. All the other user accounts on the welcome screen were gone but if i went into C:\Documents and Settings i could see all the accounts were still there. I then went into the user accounts section in the control panel and made the accounts again, with the same names as previously. Each time i made the new account it had the same picture as it did before, so i thought it must all be ok.

I switched user out of the owner account and attemped to log into my account, however it took about 15 minutes to do so, and when it finally finished i discovred that my documents etc. were not here, and the computer had just made a complete copy of what was in the Owner profile and put in under my username. What's more, now when i looks at C:\Documents and Settings there were 2 new accounts (see tumbnail), the two i had logged into, Owner and Jim had been recreated.

So now i have Owner back how it was, and Jim a copy of Owner. But both these accounts have the compute name YOUR-XB2X7J776N, after them. Not the original accounts then. Now is the main problem, as i am no longer logged in as Jim, but Jim.YOUR-XB2X7J776N, i cannot access my old Documents folder shown in the screenshot.

What is strange though is i kept all the same shortcuts on my desktop and start menu etc. as i had before

I made a boot disc using Bart PE, which allows you to get around the file access restrictions. I then moved some folders but then couldn't access the sub-folders, and files in the folder.

What i need is a way to remove the file protection so i can retrieve my stuff.

What i thought i could do is get a portable HD and copy everything, then format my computer. But then the file protection may still be on the files i moved, and it would require me to fork out for a portable Hd too

I hope that made sense to you and someone can help me

Thanks

well if you boot to dos you'll be able to copy what you like

you need to copy the user profile, try reading
http://www.petri.co.il/copy_user_profiles_in_windows_xp.htm

thanks, but when i try that, it is as if the old account's do not exist. The only one that show up are:
Jim.YOUR-XB2X7J776N
Owner.YOUR-XB2X7J776N

when you tried to create the use jim again windows saw that there was already a folder named jim thus creating
Jim.YOUR-XB2X7J776N.

Ok maybe you should try the following
1. Locate your documents, and then back them up. Your documents are in the C:\Documents and Settings\old user name\My Documents folder.
2. Locate your Favorites, and then back them up. Your Favorites are in the C:\Documents and Settings\old user name\Favorites folder.
3. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
4. In the Welcome to System Restore dialog box, click Next.
5. In the Select a Restore Point dialog box, select a date on the calendar, and then select a restore point to restore your computer to an earlier state.
6. In the Confirm Restore Point selection dialog box, confirm the selected restore point or the restoration. After you confirm the selection, the restoration process starts, your computer restarts, and you are prompted to log on.
7. Log on to your usual user profile, and then confirm that your computer has been restored correctly. If your computer has been restored correctly, do not complete the remaining steps. If your computer has not been restored correctly, go to the next step.
8. Log off the computer, and then log on to the computer by using the Administrator account, or an account with administrative permissions.

9. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
10. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
11. Important Before you continue with this step, make sure that you have backed up your documents.

Right-click the damaged user account, and then click Delete.
12. On the Action menu, click New User.
13. Type the appropriate information in the dialog box, and then click to select or clear the following check boxes:
• User must change password at next logon
• User cannot change password
• Password never expires
• Account is disabled
14. Click Create, and then click Close.
15. Log off the computer, and then log on to the computer by using the new account.
16. Restore your documents and favorites from the backup you made to the following folders
• C:\Documents and Settings\new user name\My Documents
• C:\Documents and Settings\new user name\Favorites
where new user name is the name that Windows is now using for your profile.

lol, thanks for all your help but i buggred it up good n proper

basically something happned that mucked up the registrey n that so the computer, when booted, couldn't find winlogon.exe n that so just rebooted. I probably should have tried to get a boot disc but i was impatient so used the Compaq system recovery. It basically restores the whole comp except for deleting data. So all my previous Windows system restore points are gone.

eeek
