comparison question

Hey, I was just wondering, between these 2 CPU's which would be better.

E8400 VS. Q6600

Now, from what I have heard, the E8400 is best for gamming, and the Q6600 is best for Multi-Tasking.

The multi-tasking part I can easily believe. But why is the E8400 better for games?

Im going to be doing just about everything.
Photoshop CS3, gaming, music, videos, movies...ect. (like I said, a little bit of everything)

So for my needs, which would be best?
Im thinking I should get the Q6600 and try to OC it to maybe 3.0 GHz. Should I try this even though ive never OCed before?

What are you suggestions? Also, I dont have a large buddget, so the Extreme's are out of the question (especially since ive heard that they are WAY over-priced and not worth the extra money anyway.)

Thanks,
Mike

I would go for the Q6600 simply because it is a Quad core.

Now my second point, with all respect, you will notice a 75680% increase in performance over your current Pentium4. :P

So really, either way you go will do. But the Quad core is more future proof IMO

:)

The E8400 is better for gaming because it has a higher clock speed (3.0GHz) than the Q6600 (2.4GHz). However, the Q6600 can easily OC to 3.0GHz, so I'd say go with the Q6600.

Gaming is more GPU intensive than it is CPU intensive anyways.

Thanks ramodkk, I have thought the exact same thing, I know the E8400 is better for gaming at the stock speed, but I figure, if I can learn to OC, I can get the Q6600 up to 3.0 GHz with a Zalman 9700 fan on it and good case airflow.

I have heard the Q6600 is very over-clockable also.

I'll wait for more suggestions though :)

E8400 is better for games because it's higher clocked (and oveclocks better than Q6600), and as of yet most games do not utilize four cores, so for hardcore gaming you'll be better of with fewer higher clocked cores.

Go for the Quad Core.

What will you be doing on the computer? E.g. - Editting.... internet..??

But i think the Quad Core would be the way to go because it will be the future and then you won't have to go out and buy a Quad Core in the future.

Sorry, I know I whould have elaberated more on my uses, but I was in a hurry because dinner was ready :p

Internet (e-mail, web surfing, the usual ;) )
Games (CoD4, BF2, maybe Crysis some day, but I want this thing to handle the high end games that will be comming out in the future also.)
Photoshop CS3 (Immage editing, lots at a time. Graphic designs, mostly forum signatures and desktop backgrounds, and just about any other use for it.)
Music (downloading and listening)
Videos/Movies (youtube and such, along with just regular movies)

Thats about it I think.

Thanks again for all the imput so far :)

It's really not hard to overclock, once you get the hang of it, it's really easy. The hard part is actually finding the highest you can go. ;)

And the Q6600 is a very good overclocker, if you get the G0 stepping. The B3 stepping is known to run a bit hotter and give a bit less overclock room. But I think the B3 stepping is running out of stock and they are only making G0 now, so you're good.

Oh and about the cooling, the ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro is a really nice cooler for half the price of the 9700. I idle my CPU @ 3.0GHz at ~25C and load caps at about 55-57C :)

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Go for the Quad Core then

*realizes something*

How can you kill somebody with your mind but not do the math? :P :P

on topic: enough treadjacking for me! :D

He's not gonna do that at the same time :P

or will I? *starts rubbing his head and looking up and begins daydreaming*hmmm..

haha, just kidding ;)

I might do most of that at once, but not the gaming, everything will be closed (except maybe X-Fire) while im gaming, but I listen to music, search the web and go on CS3 all at once quite often.

Again, thanks for all the imput guys! It's a good thing I thought this threw and asked for oppinions because I was pretty set on getting the E8400..but not so much now:P
