comparison

Windows has a huge software base. MacOS and Linux are less used and so have fewer malicious programs that attack them. Also Windows and MacOS are easier to use than Linux.

Linux is generally used by professionals as a stable OS for programming

Windows is a "family" OS

Mac is, well.... its for people who like to be different

windows has memory leaks up the butt. unix based OS are a lot more stable. you can leave a unix based system on for a year and dont need to restart at all.

I have servers running kernel 2.4 that have been up twenty months...

Restarting a linux server is unecessary unless kernel changes have been made. I generally restart webservers every 120 days just to run disk checks.

What's the difference? If anything, the additional services and constant load on a server would necessitate more maintenance. I wouldn't recommend Linux to everyone - it has an incredibly steep learning curve and most don't have the aptitude for it.

There are tons of versions of linux out there. its not all for professionals or programming or servers. alot of versions are for every day use my pc i duel boot windows and linux. There's even a version of linux that when you first run it, it explains how its like windows and how its different and how to use it like it is. I even installed linux on a computer for my mom and told her it was windows sp3 and she beleved me for 2 months before my brother told her what it was.
