i have an old skt 478 board but dont want to upgrade just yet. in this board i have a P4 northwood 2.0ghz. now really. thats slow. so i wanted to know how to tell if prescott cores are compatible with your mobo, if there is a way.

naw. i have a REALLY old HP workstation xw4000 which my dad got from work. i had to buy a couple new things when i bought it but i have no idea what the mobo is. so if not, should i just go with another northwood core?

You'll have to be careful what northwood core you get, you probably have a northwood A there are b and c varients which probably also are not supported by your chipset/bios.

edit: Supports one Intel® Pentium 4 processor, up to 2.8 GHz, i845E 133MHz FSB (533). So iirc that would mean you can use northwood A up to 2.8GHz or B up to 2.66GHz

yeah i got CPUz. turns out its a compaq model 0784h. the proc also has a rated FSB of 400. wow. im kinda starting to think that getting a new processor is pretty worthless now, but oh well ill be upgrading soon anyway.
