Hi there, so I have an I7 6700k. Quite happy with it, but just thinking for the future, if it starts to fall behind would I be able to upgrade to say an 8700k on my motherboard? It appears that both are the same socket, LGA 1151 I think it is. It would be epic if I could. I won't at this point, but... curious about this.
My specs are in my sig, but I'm using an MSI Z170 gaming motherboard. Thank you.

No unfortunately coffee lake is only supported on 300 series boards currently.

They changed the way the power is being delivered on the Z370 so it can handle higher core count processors. So although the number of pins and the physical location of the pins are the same, the pins itself are dealing with different instructions than the Z170 and Z270's LGA1151 socket. Which is why they are incompatible.
