Complete Backup

I've been having problems with my battery on my laptop. And I am sending it into HP for them to [try to] "repair it" since its still under warrenty. I know that they are going to set my computer back to factory settings. So is there a way to complete back up my computer with the programs so that when I get my laptop back I can just load the restore and it'll be like I didn't send it. Right now I have a blank 160GB Western Digital External Hard Drive. My computer is only 80GB so I know i'll have plenty of room for a restore. I also have Restrospect Express that came with the external drive. How could I do what I want to do.


[I also have my hard drive partisioned but there is nothing at all on the other part of the drive. Its only like 1 GB of space in there. Will it matter with the restore?]
 
Well if your going to be receiving the same exact laptop back, then you can use Norton Ghost to make an "image" of te drive, then either burn it to a CD/DVD or copy it to another Hard Drive. THen when you get the computer back, you boot from the CD/DVD/Image and it will restore it to the exact same way as it was before.

Why would they set your settings back to default if you are having battery problems? Backing up your data on your hdd isnt a bad idea, but did you hdd come with any 1 touch backup type of thing, since most of them do know. And omega if he was having trouble with his settings, if they set them to default, and then he restored it wouldnt that just put him back where he started?
 
Ok, well I know pretty much for a fact that the battery is defective, and HP won't do anything until I send it in. But I'll have to see what they do to it and I've backup up just files, now I want to backup the whole computer so I can restore it if I want to.
 
The retrospect isn't that cool of a program, but it will work. Wwhen you install it, or if you already did, just go in and backup your intire computer and restore it, IF they actually would restore it to factory deafult, but I do not see why they would do that. Also, I usually use ghost which works for me, and is super fast when it comes to restoring an imgage of a drive. In windows XP pro under accessories and system tools click back up, and the wizzard will take you through a few steps. choose to backup the intire computer and direct the file to be saved on the Maxtor Onetouch drive. The creates a file which can be used as a rstore CD. You can set it up to do incremental backups and it will constantly backup any added or changed files. But as I said in this case, there is no reason for them to restore to factory, because it's just the battery.......an easy fix.
 
Yeah I am using Ghost now. I also don't see why they would do that, but thats what they told me. Yeah I didn't think about the windows back up either.

I have a few more questions:
Currently my hdd format is FAT32 if I make it NTFS will it make any difference in the restore?

Also, I have a beta of Vista and when I get my computer back I want to install it and try it out. Can I just partion a part of the drive for that? And if I just install Vista and not XP would I have to go back to XP before I could restore my computer, and get rid of vista? Or would I have to reformat to XP then restore?

One last question:
I have XP Pro. and if I get my laptop back with stuff on it and XP Home installed, [sometimes they will install another operating system type for no reason] when I restore it will it change back to XP Pro?
